Alexander Proctor Thorne

Member of the Proctor (Yorkist) bloodline who never carried the calling but kept the family's ledgers and secrets.

Alexander Proctor Thorne was born in 1892 in Bandera, Texas, and lived eighty-two years as a telegraph operator in San Antonio, a man who spent his working life listening to other people's news and repeating none of it. He was the younger son of the cattle drover and vampire slayer Alexander Thorne, The Bitter Warden, and of the laundress and slayer Harriet Bartlett, The Grey Quill. His brother was Joseph Proctor Thorne. In 1916 he married the seamstress Adriana Navarro, of the Tejano Navarros of the San Antonio missions, and they raised two children, James Proctor Thorne and Norma Proctor Thorne, of whom the daughter became a slayer of the White Ledger. He died in 1974 of a sudden collapse, aged eighty-two. He belonged to the House of Thorne and to the Proctor bloodline of the White Ledger, descended from Thomas Faulkner and Isabel Proctor, who were married in January 1486. He was not called to the work, and he was content to be what his mother called the family's ear. He was born in Bandera because his mother had gone there in the winter to nurse a cousin. The Bartletts were a scattered family, and one of them, a girl named Lottie, had married a cypress-shingle cutter and gone out to the Texas hill country, where the Medina runs clear and Polish settlers had built a church and a great many sawmills. In January 1892 Lottie wrote that she was ill and alone, and Harriet, who was heavy with her second child and had never in her life refused a request from a Bartlett, went west by rail and stage with a basket of linen and a bottle of tincture. The child arrived early, in a loft room over a shingle yard, in a cold snap that froze the water in the pitcher, with the Polish midwife from down the road and a delighted audience of cutters' children. Harriet was back in Kentucky by the spring, with a baby in a shawl and a very low opinion of Texas stagecoaches. She said that the place had at least been good for something. He grew up in Kentucky, on the farm lane outside the town, among the wash-boilers and the horses, a quiet, long-limbed boy who was fond of animals and distrustful of noise. His elder brother Joseph was the talker. Alexander was the one who sat in the kitchen with a pencil, writing things down, and his mother, who could see what that meant, said nothing. When he was eight his father was killed in a churchyard on the Ohio shore, and he was kept home from school for three weeks, by which time he had a better idea than anyone supposed of what had been done to him and why nobody would say. He was not told. He listened. A boy who listens in a house of hunters learns a great many things that were not meant for him, and by twelve he could have told you the name of every Ledger cousin between the Bluegrass and the river, and which of them owed his mother a favour. The trade came from his brother. Joseph had learned the telegraph from an operator at the Maysville depot, and in the winter of 1905 he came home on a visit and set a sounder on the kitchen table and tapped out the boy's name. Alexander, who was thirteen, wrote the letters down in the margin of a catechism before Joseph had finished the second one. By the next summer he was in the depot at Paris, Kentucky, sweeping floors in exchange for an hour a day at the key, and at seventeen he took a place on the Southern Pacific wire at Houston on the advice of an operator who had heard that Texas wanted men. He went out in the autumn of 1909, on the day coach, with a carpet bag, a dictionary and a letter from his mother. The letter, which he did not open until Louisiana, said that he would find a Ledger cousin in San Antonio on Soledad Street who made hats, and that he should go to church on Sundays and not lend money to anyone with a good story. San Antonio in the years before the Great War was a city of plazas, mule cars and a new kind of army, with Fort Sam Houston to the northeast and Kelly Field soon to be dug out of the prairie to the south. He took a post at the telegraph office on Commerce Street, and then at the railway depot, and he proved to be one of those operators whose fist, as the trade put it, was clean. He took a message exactly as it was sent, he did not guess at words and he did not talk. The Texas chapter of the White Ledger noticed this before he did. It was the milliner, Ada Menger, who first sent him a message of her own, a plain order for straw braid from a supplier in Uvalde, which came to him as three ordinary-looking lines and a sign-off that he afterwards recognised as a cipher. He sent it on. A week later another came, and another. He did not ask why a hat shop needed so many telegrams. He understood that he was being given the work that a man could do who was not a hunter, and who sat all day at the one place in the city where everything came through. He met his wife in the line outside the Western Union window in the summer of 1915. Adriana Navarro was twenty-four, a dark, quick, humorous seamstress from the Westside who had taken in sewing since she left the commercial school, and she was sending a wire to a cousin at Laredo about a bolt of cotton lawn that had not arrived. She was cross. He transcribed her message with its full punctuation and, in the margin, wrote what he took to be a better word for the cotton lawn. She read it over his shoulder and said that he was right. Her father, Vicente Navarro, who set type for the Express and who was in some sense a colleague of anyone who dealt in words, received him in the narrow house on the Westside and asked to see his handwriting. They were married in 1916 in the church on the Westside, and the old man gave the bride away in a black suit that was a size too large. They lived in a rented house near the river, a few streets from the old Mexican market. Their son James Proctor Thorne was born in 1917, in the winter of the American entry into the war, when the city was filling with recruits and the telegraph office ran on three shifts. Norma Proctor Thorne came in 1921, at Phoenix, where Alexander was on a relief posting at the Southern Pacific office, in the week of the great San Antonio flood, and he took the news of the water off the wire and sent the news of the child back. James grew up quiet, like his father, and became a telegraph operator. Norma was called young, and went out with the hunters of the Ledger, and her father, who had never fired a gun, was the one who sat up for her. He did not say much. He left a lamp in the window and a plate in the oven. The influenza of 1918 filled the Westside with coffins, and his wife, who was sewing shrouds from morning until night, was ill for a week and recovered. The Depression years were lean for everyone but the railway, which kept running and kept its operators on at reduced hours. Adriana's sewing carried the family, and Alexander, who took the cut in his pay without complaint, spent the evenings copying from memory, for the Ledger's files, the telegrams that he had been forbidden to keep. In 1941 the river was cleaned and landscaped and given walks, and the city that had filled with soldiers in one war filled with them again in the next. He worked through it, past sixty, on the night wire, because the younger men were in the army. Adriana died in 1953, and Norma had died in 1949, and he spent the last twenty years in the Westside house with his son, a transistor radio and a key that he had brought home from the depot and wired to a battery on the kitchen table. He retired late. In the spring of 1974 he sat down on the kitchen chair at the key, as he did every morning, and tapped out, as he did every morning, his own initials, and the neighbour who came in with the milk found him there. He had been dead for some minutes. The sounder, which was still connected to the battery, was clicking steadily on the open line. Alexander Proctor Thorne is remembered in the Thorne family as the operator of the Commerce Street office, the quiet son who carried his father's name to Texas and kept the wires clean. In the Slayerverse he stands for the listeners of the White Ledger, who never fought, who heard everything and passed on only what was needed, and whose patience made the work of hunters possible.
