Amunra Ankhtau

Amunra Ankhtau, called The Gaunt Herald, was a hired knife of the river cults who was turned in 2975 BCE and became the Ashen Concord's most feared assassin in the Nile Valley. She felt every blade before it fell, until Horrenep Setrarara found the way round it in 2945 BCE.

The hilt was hippopotamus ivory, yellowed to the color of old butter, with a shallow groove worn into one side by a left thumb. Amunra Ankhtau bought it, blade and all, in the dry month of 2982 BCE with the first fee she was ever paid to hurt someone. She was fifteen by the count of the Nile Valley river-folk, who counted in floods, and she had been born in 2997 BCE at Nefnefreni, a caravan stop where the donkey trains from the western oases came in to water, and where a girl who could keep still and keep quiet could earn her bread. The knife was flint, long and leaf-shaped, and cost more than she had. She paid it off in two seasons. For the rest of her life she warmed the hilt in her palm before any killing, thumb in the groove, and she could not have said when it became a habit instead of a decision. It was a good living, in the way that such livings are. In the years of The First Night, the river cults of Egypt were a loose chain of shrine-keepers and grain-lenders who settled their quarrels with hired hands, and Amunra Ankhtau, later known along the water as The Gaunt Herald, was the best hand available to the ones who paid in advance. She wanted, in so far as anyone could tell, to be surprised once. She never was. There was a prickle that came on her skin a heartbeat before any blade fell, a plain physical tingle, like cold water run down the back of the neck, and she had known it since she was small and thought everybody did. It kept her alive through seven years of cult work. It did not stop her being a hired knife. In 2975 BCE, at twenty-two, she was cut down on a battlefield known as the Reed Flats during a struggle between two rival shrines, a spear through the ribs and her flint blade snapped off at the hilt in the same stroke. The tingle had warned her and she had moved, and the spear had found her anyway; she noted this with a dying person's interest. She lay on her back in the stems with the hilt still in her fist. A stranger came and sat down beside her. This was Baa Elashbaon, a vampire of the Levant who had come up the river that season on a cedar-boat from the coast, bringing timber for a temple and a taste for local talent. They spoke for a little. He asked what she wanted, and she said she would like for once not to be told when it was coming. He told her it would not help, and made her anyway. It was an honest answer. He stayed until the flood was over, taught her to wait through the day indoors and to find the next night's feeding in a crowd without panicking at the prickle, and went home down the coast in a cedar-boat with the tide. She never saw him again. The Ashen Concord took her in on his introduction, and the Vampireverse, which prizes a good tool, set her to work as its assassin on the upper river. She had the gift she had had before, now sharpened into what the Concord called The Held Breath: a surge of cold across her skin, a split instant of notice before any hit landed, which she could now use on purpose, in a crowd or in the dark. It cost her. In a market the sensation never stopped, and she wore long linen sleeves in the hottest months to dull it. A second trait, odder, let her skin drink lamplight, so that a lit room went dim by a hand's breadth around her. Her weaknesses were what the Vigil had learned the hard way: silver in a weapon's tip, a line of salt laid on a threshold, a ward scratched over a doorway. The hilt she kept. She fitted it with a copper blade, then a second, then a third; by 2948 BCE it had carried five. She made her first mistake at the harvest festival at Mennefkau that year. The Concord wanted the fort's steward gone before the flood, and she went in at dusk wearing a river-cult sash, close enough to hear the dancing. She felt the prickle as she lunged; she moved; and a girl was beside her. The girl had crossed the court between two drumbeats. Amunra stabbed at her and cut a door-post, and a splinter of it laid her cheek open. She felt the girl's hand coming, and the warning came, and for the first time in her life it had been no use at all. The next thing she knew, there was salt across the threshold in a bright line, and she stood on the wrong side of it. The girl was Horrenep Setrarara, a temple dancer and, as it turned out, a vampire slayer, with a face like a cat, and she asked, with real sympathy, if Amunra would like to sit down. She did not answer. For three years she hunted Horrenep Setrarara the way a person plays at a game of which they do not know the rules. The Concord kept her moving between storehouses and boats, and in that time she hoarded seven vaults of heirlooms, which she regarded as a retirement fund. She thought of the dancer as a stubborn thing and a tiring one, and was irritated to find that she respected her. Horrenep did not threaten, did not hide, and did not seem to hate her. When two Vigil scouts died trying to locate her, the girl sent a message through a ferryman that Amunra might have the bodies for burial. It was a courtesy. Amunra took it as one. The end came in the spring of 2945 BCE at Setnefep. The Concord had taken a cellar room under a stone-floored granary at a river landing, with three doorways and a grain chute, and she went to meet them. She found two of the doorways salted. The third was open, with the dancer in it. She felt the cold run down her skin and stepped to meet it, and then there were three silvered clay shots coming almost at once across the stone, fired by a woman who had clearly worked out that the prickle could warn of one thing but not of three. It had never occurred to her that a single warning could be made to choke. She was fifty-two, one of the oldest killers on the river, and she fell with her thumb already finding the groove on the hilt. Horrenep Setrarara took the hilt from the pouch at her belt and carried it out of the granary, and at the landing she gave it to a ferryman's girl, who liked the shape. The girl used it for years to scrape fish.
