Occult IncUniverseIn developmentAryuini Bhavian, the Hollow Hunger, was a river-village guard turned in a plague pit in 2077 BCE, who served the Midnight Assembly for fifty-three years until a slayer's spear ended it in 2024 BCE. The Vigil still keeps the slayer's account of their first meeting.

The first account of Aryuini Bhavian that survives from The Bronze Vigil was written by an enemy. In the Vigil house at Bhataesh, a clay tablet records how a slayer called Praini Dhaaresh came down to the river stair at Nipraa one evening in 2035 BCE and found a figure standing at the top of it, quite still, with a guard's long cloak and an unlit torch. He wrote that it did not seem to be waiting for anything. He wrote that he had expected a monster and had found a tired soldier. Then the dread came up through his feet, and the tablet gets less orderly. It is the nearest thing to an official portrait that the Hollow Hunger has. Aryuini Bhavian was born in 2099 BCE at Nipraa, a river village in the Indus and Ganges plain, in what is now India, the child of a ferry-keeper and a woman who made reed baskets. Nipraa sat where a creek met the main channel, and the family lived on the landing. Aryuini grew up quiet and big-handed, learned to handle a pole on the wet stairs, and was hired at sixteen as a landing guard for the grain barges, one of the people who stood at the top of the steps and made sure the cargo reached the market. A soldier by temperament and by trade, Aryuini liked rules, liked a clear post, and liked being told where to stand. The want that lay under all of it was the plainest one, to be somewhere for a reason. The plague came to Nipraa in 2077 BCE, in the wet season, when Aryuini was twenty-two. It moved through the landing in nine days. The dead were carried to a pit beyond the reed beds and covered with lime, and Aryuini was carried there on the sixth day with the others, still breathing but past the stage where anyone argued about it. Someone came to the pit in the night and took them out, and what that someone was, and what happened afterward, Aryuini would not discuss. No maker is recorded. The Midnight Assembly's own scribes list the soldier with a blank beside the name, and whether the blank was tact or ignorance is a question the Assembly itself never answered. Aryuini woke weeks later in a different place, with a thirst that had no name yet, and went on being a soldier because there was nothing else to be. The Midnight Assembly was a house of the vampires of the Ganges plain that worked at night and demanded very little of its recruits beyond the willingness to stand. It gave Aryuini a post at the head of a warehouse stair, a wage in grain and a cloak, and the title of door-warden. In that house Aryuini became something more specific. A gift came up slowly, a dread that rose from the body like heat from a stone. The Long Shiver, the Assembly called it. It crept in through the soles of the feet and the back of the neck, and a person who felt it simply could not step across a threshold. Hunters turned back, drovers abandoned loaded carts, and a famous cell of nine slayers, sent to end the Assembly's door-warden, retreated one by one over a single season. Aryuini outlasted all nine, and had the grace not to mention it. The gift had a cost, as these things do. It left Aryuini hollow, in the sense of the nickname, with a hunger that outran what a body could take in and a dry emptiness behind the breastbone for days afterward. It also did nothing against salt. A line of salt across the doorway stopped the Long Shiver cold, as did a spear tipped in silver, and Aryuini never entirely trusted a house with a mat at the door. A small habit survived from the landing days. Aryuini carried a stone stamp seal cut with a river bull, the kind used to mark grain-sacks, and pressed it into the doorframe of any building held for the Assembly, the way a ferry-keeper's child marks a boat. Praini Dhaaresh came to Nipraa in 2035 BCE, the year after a siege at Bhataesh, following a line of dying cattle. Aryuini was feeding in the village that had once been home, and heard the footsteps on the river stair, and used the dread. The man did not turn back at once. He stood at the threshold of the hut with a stone-tipped spear in his fist and a clay lamp in the other, shaking, and Aryuini realized with some interest that this was the first person in years who had failed to flee. The fight lasted four minutes. Praini retreated down the stair, bleeding, with a lamp that would not go out. From that night on, the Vampireverse had a vampire slayer on the Assembly's trail, one who talked to the dead before every blow, and the soldier thought about it more than a door-warden should. A guard learns the difference between a man who blusters and a man who has decided. The slayer had decided. It showed in the way he planted his feet on wet stone, and in the clay lamp, which he set down before every fight like a man putting down a cup he meant to come back for. It went on for eleven years. Aryuini lost a hand to the spear's shock at a ford called Kotlai, and it grew back wrong, slowly, with a stiff thumb. The soldier came to regard the slayer with the dry fondness of a veteran for a tireless enemy. He was stubborn and clumsy, and he never once gave up, and Aryuini found that the work was less lonely than it had been. When the pursuit narrowed, Aryuini was not surprised. In 2024 BCE, at the river town of Prayuini, the Assembly's warehouse had every threshold salted in a single night. The soldier stood in the last open doorway with the stamp seal in one hand and the slayer's spear coming through, aged seventy-five and fifty-three years a vampire, and for the first time in a long career had no post to hold. The seal was found in the doorframe afterward, with the bull pressed deep into the wood.
