The Maahes who cleaned up. Baki-Nefer was a quiet craftsman in the tomb-builders' village, the last person anyone expected the mantle to choose. He was offered it two years after Userhat-Seti lost it, in the middle of a crisis that threatened to destroy the Pride from within.
His first task was the hardest: finding and removing every agent the Children of Apep had placed during the Night Watch years. He worked in secret and by patience, with the help of a young woman named Wenut-Sen, a grove-keeper's daughter who had walked from the highlands to Thebes to tell him that the groves' oaths had been poisoned. Together they identified the corrupted keepers, replaced them with trusted families, and re-sealed the groves.
His second task was personal. Userhat-Seti, stripped of the mantle but still alive, had become the Children of Apep's most useful tool. They had made him an advisor, a prisoner and a bargaining piece. Baki-Nefer spent twenty years hunting him down, and in the end, he found him not among the brood but alone in a ruined house in the Delta, a broken man with no mantle and nothing left to protect. Baki-Nefer did not kill him. He took him home.
He then dismantled the Night Watch office, brought every remaining Pride post back under the Roll, and re-founded the Pride's independence at the village of the tomb-builders, where he had started.
What he left behind: the purge, the restored groves, and the end of the Night Watch.
