Christiana Thorne

Detective slayer of the Proctor (Yorkist) bloodline (House of Thorne), known as The Silent Ledger. Craft: Seal and Sanction.

The ledger that Christiana Thorne kept for fifty years was never shown to anyone outside the White Ledger's inner circle, and the townspeople of Richmond, Yorkshire, who knew her only as the woman behind the counter of a well-stocked shop, would have laughed to hear that the tidy hand which totted up their credit also recorded the deaths of vampires. Born in 1616, she was a vampire slayer of the House of Thorne on her father's side and of the Proctor bloodline through her mother, and the family remembered her under the name of The Silent Ledger, a title earned by her habit of saying almost nothing and writing down almost everything. She was born in Richmond, under the walls of the old Norman castle, to Alastair Thorne, a yeoman who worked a modest holding on the lower slopes above the Swale, and Christiana Proctor, a tavern keeper's daughter whose name the child inherited. The Thornes had come south from the Northumbrian border in her grandfather's day and still carried the manners of reivers who had learned to farm: they kept their doors barred at dusk, their dogs loud, and their opinions to themselves. The Proctor side, by contrast, had grown up among the noise of a taproom, where a girl learned to hear a lie in the way a man ordered his ale. Christiana's mother passed on that ear along with her name. A sister, Sibyl Proctor, followed in 1617, and the two girls grew up sharing a bed under the eaves, a distinction between them already visible in childhood: Sibyl chattered and Christiana watched. Richmond in those years was a market town of stone lanes and slate roofs, its cobbled square busy on Saturdays with lead from the dales, knitted stockings from Swaledale, and cattle driven in from the moor. The Great North Road lay a few miles east and the coaching traffic brought news, rumour and the occasional stranger, all of which the tavern side of the family turned to account. Christiana learned her letters from the parish clerk, learned reckoning from her father's rent-books, and learned discretion from a household in which the Thornes and the Proctors, each with their own idea of what a family owed the dead, sat down to the same table. She was a plain, upright girl, dark-browed and long-handed, who was said to walk through the market as though counting the paving stones. Her mother died in 1641, when Christiana was twenty-five, and it was in the year after that the civil wars began to divide the northern gentry, some of the great households around Richmond declaring for the king and others for Parliament. The shop she and her household then kept, a general dealer's on the market side selling thread, salt, candles, tobacco and ironmongery, sat at the crossroads of every rumour. Soldiers on both sides bought from her, paid in promises, and were entered carefully in the day-book. It was there that she learned what she later called the first rule of the ledger: that a debt written down cannot be argued with afterwards. The calling came to her in 1644. A storm out of the North Sea had battered the coast for three days, and when it blew itself out a ship washed in at a landing not far up the coast with a full crew and no living men aboard. The carters who came through Richmond with the tale spoke of hatches nailed shut from within and of sailors laid out in their bunks as neatly as candles. Christiana, then twenty-eight, went with her father to see the vessel because a chandler's account was owing on her books. She stood in the hold, smelled what she would later learn to recognise as the sweetish, cold reek of a nest that had fed and gone, and felt the slow turning of certainty that every Proctor and Thorne of the blood had described to her as children and that she had half hoped never to feel. That evening she wrote the first entry in a small book she sealed with wax, and that habit became her craft. The craft the family named Seal and Sanction was something between method and instinct. Christiana would examine a scene, a wound, a cellar, a parish register, and from it fix the vampire's movements in her mind as a detective fixes a suspect's, and then she would bind the place against it, sealing the doors and windows and thresholds with hawthorn and salt and her own signature and seal. A place so sealed, she claimed, could not be entered by anything that had been named in her book. Her gear was of the plainest kind: a flintlock pistol, loaded with iron shot she cast herself in a cooking ladle, a bundle of hawthorn stakes carried under her shopkeeper's apron, and the sealed ledger, which she kept in a locked drawer beneath the counter along with a pound of tallow candles and a jar of humbugs for the children. Her hunting was patient and rarely violent. In the winter of 1649 she followed a run of vanished drovers from the moors above Reeth to a disused lead smelting mill, and rather than storming it, she spent nine nights walking the ground, mapping the creature's comings and goings from the smell of the flue and the marks of its boots on the frost. On the tenth night she sealed every exit but one, and her Proctor cousins, who had been quietly warned by letter, waited at the last door with stakes. The White Ledger took the tally that season. In the family telling the Guest, the vampire who escaped at Towton in 1461 and whom both ledgers blame each other for, always hovered at the edge of such stories, and Christiana was suspicious of anyone who claimed to know where he was. She entered his name, once, as a blank line at the head of a fresh page, and never wrote in it. Sibyl, meanwhile, had become a dressmaker and lived close by, and it was Sibyl who carried Christiana's messages between the shop and the cousins in the dales, hiding notes in hems and buttonholes. Their father Alastair lived until 1653, long enough to see his elder daughter's shop prosper and to be buried with the peace of a man who had understood what she was without ever being told. Christiana never married. Whether this was choice or circumstance the family did not record, though a cousin once remarked that she had spent her life keeping accounts with the dead and had no spare column for the living. She was fond of the children of the street and would slip them sugar-plums, and she kept an eye on any child whose father or mother had gone missing. The great plague year of 1665 and 1666 reached the north more slowly than it had London, but Richmond was not spared, and Christiana spent it in a fever of activity, sealing infected houses against vampires who might take advantage of the terror and burying the bodies with the parish sexton in the dark. She survived it, as she survived the Restoration, the coming of the coffee-houses, and the long decades of quiet after. The sealed ledger passed in her later years into the keeping of a Proctor nephew, and she would sit beside the fire in her upper room with a shawl over her knees and correct the entries that others copied out. Christiana Thorne died in 1693 of the plague, a late and isolated return of the sickness in the town, at the age of seventy-seven, in the room above the shop. She was buried in the parish churchyard beside her parents, under a plain stone that says only her name and the year. In the White Ledger she is remembered as the keeper whose entries were never once disproved, and among the later generations of the Slayerverse she is cited as the origin of the careful, sealed record, the notion that a hunt is not finished until it is written down and shut away.
