Dionisia Proctor

Member of the Proctor (Yorkist) bloodline who never carried the calling but kept the family's ledgers and secrets.

Dionisia Proctor was born in 1581 in Selby, Yorkshire, a small port and market town on the Ouse where the great Norman abbey church still dominated the roofs and where barges from York and Hull tied up below the bridge. She belonged to the House of Proctor, the Yorkist family that had kept the White Ledger since Walter Proctor opened it in 1455, and she descended from the marriage of Thomas Faulkner and Isabel Proctor in January 1486. Yet by her time the great quarrels of the Wars of the Roses were a century old, and what reached a girl like Dionisia was not the drama of Towton but a working inheritance: a name, a set of habits, and an understanding that some things seen after dark were written down and not discussed at table. Her father, Blaise Proctor, born in 1558, was a yeoman who held a modest tenure of arable and meadow on the low ground outside the town, subject to the flooding that came up the river most Februaries. He was a careful, unhurried man who counted his sacks of barley twice and his neighbours' opinions once. Her mother, Fenella Thorne, born in 1554, came of the northern border stock that the Proctors so often married into, and she worked as a housekeeper, first in a larger household in Selby and then, once children arrived, over her own kitchen and dairy. Fenella kept a Northumbrian habit of speaking little and noticing everything, and it was from her that Dionisia learned to sit quietly at a doorway and listen to what a room was saying. A brother, Oswald Proctor, had been born the year before her, in 1580, and the two grew up sharing a bed-chamber, a bench at church and a running competition over who could recite the Sunday psalms with fewer stumbles. The Selby of her childhood was a place of wet wool, tar, and salt fish. Boats came upriver with coal, alum and Baltic timber, and the town lived on the small margins of carrying and selling. The reformed church had settled into the abbey by then, and the family went to service where the old monks' stalls still stood in the choir. Money was mostly coin of small silver, with much dealing done on credit and chalk marks, and a household like the Proctors' rarely saw gold. Plague was never far off. Outbreaks in the 1580s and 1590s ran along the river trade like sparks along a fuse, and children learned early to read the shutters of a street. Dionisia lost her mother in 1595, when she was fourteen, and much of the shape of her adult character came from that spring: she took over the sewing of the household, and with it a kind of seriousness that did not leave her. Needlework was what she trained in. A seamstress in a market town of that day was neither a great artisan nor a servant but something in between, paid by the piece and by the season, and the trade offered a woman rare independence if she was quick and exact. Dionisia learned to cut linen without waste, to work a fine buttonhole in worsted, to turn a collar, to line a doublet and to alter a gown from one wearer to the next so that no one could see it had been altered. She worked from her father's kitchen table in good light and from other people's houses in bad. Doing so, she saw into a great many cupboards, and the family valued this. A seamstress in a house at fitting time hears who has come back changed, who has stopped sleeping, who wears a high collar in July. Some of what Dionisia noticed passed to Blaise and, through Blaise, to the Proctor cousins who kept the family's business. She was never a slayer, and never claimed to be, but she understood herself as a pair of eyes the White Ledger could use. In 1598, at seventeen, she married Wilfred Stansfield, a cooper born in 1576. The match had been talked over through the winter by both families and settled in the way such things were, with bread, ale and a small dowry of linen and a feather bed. Wilfred worked in a yard beside the river where he made barrels for herring, ale and tallow, and the sound of his mallet on the hoops carried through the lane every morning. He was patient, broad-handed, and given to whistling as he worked, and he had the great virtue of an incurious mind: he asked his wife no questions about the notes she sometimes sent to her father or the evenings her cousins from York came to sit in the kitchen, and he never seemed to feel this as a lack of trust. The couple set up house in two rooms above a shop near the market cross, and Dionisia sewed at the window over the street. Their first child, Blanche Stansfield, was born in 1600, and their second, Hamond Stansfield, in 1604. Dionisia raised them the way she had been raised, on plain food and short prayers, and with a practical education: Blanche learned the needle and the account book, Hamond the cooper's trade at his father's elbow, and both learned to be quiet at the right moments. Blaise Proctor died in 1607, and with him went the yeoman holding, which was divided in the customary way; Dionisia and Oswald settled the shares without a lawsuit, which in that period was itself worth remarking. Her account of the settlement, written in her clear, upright hand on the back of a tailor's bill, survived in a family box for generations. She was known in Selby as a woman who could be trusted with a secret and, with equal reliability, with a debt. The plague years and hard winters of the early Stuart reigns tested the household repeatedly. In the bitter winters of the 1610s the Ouse froze at the edges and the cooperage stood idle for weeks, so that it was Dionisia's sewing that fed the family; in 1625, when the new king's reign opened with a bad plague year, she kept the shutters closed, drew water from the well herself, and sewed shrouds for neighbours for the price of a loaf. She did not write the names of the dead in the White Ledger, since that was for the vampires taken and not for common mortality, but she kept her own small tally in the margin of a psalter, and it was long. The Proctors' rivalry with the Lancashire Faulkners, the old dispute about the vampire the ledgers call the Guest, reached her mainly as a family joke: when a piece of good fortune fell to a Faulkner cousin, she would say that the Red Ledger had clearly been busy. She meant it kindly, and the cousins who heard it repeated it. Dionisia's last year was dominated by a duty as ordinary as any in the town. In 1633, aged fifty-two, she attended a neighbour's lying-in as a helper, as women of her generation and standing so often did, and the young woman she sat beside was struck by childbed fever, which then went through the room like a fire through thatch. Dionisia caught it and died of childbed that year, having outlived by a full generation the age at which most women of her time were buried. Her husband Wilfred survived her by barely a year and died in 1634. The two were laid in the same churchyard within sight of the abbey, and their children, Blanche until 1663 and Hamond until 1650, carried the household forward. Within the family, Dionisia is remembered as one of those figures the ledgers never celebrated but always relied on, the watching hands at the edge of the lamplight. Her brother Oswald's line and her own Stansfield descendants kept her sewing box for a long time, and the buttons in it were said to have come from every good coat in Selby. Historians of the Slayerverse who trace the White Ledger's quiet informants point to women like Dionisia, whose trade took them through every door in a town and whose loyalty ran through blood rather than through any calling. She was a Proctor to the last, in patience and in precision, and the stitch she was known for, a tight hidden seam that held when a garment was pulled and did not show, is still spoken of among her kin as the way to do a hard thing well.
