Know the pulse before you know the name. Elashai Ashenon had one rule, she kept it for sixty-one years as a vampire, and it was why people who met her afterward remembered a woman who seemed to know them already. Before she spoke to anyone she listened, sometimes through a wall and sometimes across a courtyard, until she had the rhythm of the heart. A heart said more than a face: who was lying, who was afraid and of what, who wanted something badly enough to forget how to hide it. Names came later, and mattered less. She was born in 1754 BCE at Kamelim, a river village in the Levant, in what is now Lebanon, where the river ran cold off the mountain and the village made its living from cedar timber floated down to the coast. Her voice was noticed at a feast when she was nine. By her twenties she was a court singer at Tiralalim, a hill city whose great hall had been raised by an architect named Sidashon Melalalon, a long-lived man with a stoop whom the court called simply the Architect, and not always kindly. He was her patron. He paid for her lessons, her rooms and a lyre with a gold bridge, and he had no intention of letting her leave. In 1727 BCE he made sure of it. She was twenty-seven. He turned her in a small room under the hall, without asking, because a singer could be bought away and a vampire could not. She had no vote in it and she never pretended she had. The Pale Concord took her in as a gift to the house, and in the Vampireverse she was counted among its quieter members, and she spent the first year learning what she had become. The trait was not a voice. It was ears, nose and a sense for the movement of blood that grew out of the same change, and the Concord called it Pulse Hunter: within a few paces she could count a human heart, and she could tell a fast one that meant fear from a fast one that meant wanting. The cost was constant noise. She could not sleep in a crowded building, and she had to keep a lyre near her, because plucking a single string let her hear herself. The Concord found her useful as a charmer. She never raised her voice. She sat with merchants, wardens and stewards, sang for them, and watched their hearts until she knew which song to sing next. A hall of people would settle into a mood she had chosen for them, and some of them wept without knowing why. She also had one bitter private habit: she never ate in front of anyone she liked. Her maker's house did not last. In 1684 BCE Sidashon was sealed beneath Tiralalim, and the Concord scattered within the season. She had no one to answer to for the first time in forty-three years, which was the nearest thing to freedom she had ever tasted and which she took to be a danger. She went east, with a wool caravan across the river country and then up the mountains by the tin roads, singing in courts as she went. That was how she came to the Persian Plateau. She stopped at Xerhorad because the hill families had a habit of settling quarrels by a village elder, and there was no elder worth listening to. In the hills she took the title of judge. She wore a braided copper wire on her head and sat in a stone house cut into a slope, where families brought their disputes over water rights and grazing and stolen goats. She heard both sides, listened to both hearts, and decided. The verdicts held because they were right more often than not. The loser paid a tithe, and the tithe was blood. She also kept fourteen informants in the Xerhorad watch, who earned their barley by telling her who was coming up the road. Elashai Ashenon met Hortaush Arvaius in 1679 BCE at the Cistern Gate, a cut in the hills above Xerhorad where the caravan track passed a spring. She had gone to the night camp of a tin caravan, sat across the fire from the master, and sung. The master wept. The guard across the fire from her, a lean man with a clay lantern, did not, and she listened for his heart and found it going as slowly as a sleeper's. It did not leap when she sang, and it did not rise when she smiled. It was the first heart in forty-eight years that had told her nothing. She tried again and got the same answer. When they fought at the spring she broke a rib of his, which was easy, and she should have killed him, but she stood there listening and could not decide what he would do. He got away with the sling. She never did decide. She left him alone for thirteen years because she did not understand him, and he used the time. Elashai heard the news of the Vigil's visits to the district the way she heard everything, by heartbeat, and noticed that whenever the lantern man came near the hills the informants went quiet. She moved her bed away from the door. In the Bronze Vigil the plateau's vampire slayer was a man she could not read, and she disliked the feeling. She dug no well, kept no stream and relied on the rule she had always kept, that nothing she had not listened to could surprise her. On the last night of the cold season in 1666 BCE she sat up listening. There was one heartbeat on the track, slow and calm. She listened to it all the way up the slope and did not move, because it had never meant anything before. What she missed was the sound under the heartbeat: water, a spring running where there was no spring, a hum like a held note. It came over the sill. Her weakness for running water at a threshold had been learned by others at great cost, and she had a house with no stream because of it. He had brought one. When she rose, a hand stained with ash and resin took her wrist and left a mark on the skin that burned like a coal. She was eighty-eight. The Crowned Judge was destroyed before the sky began to grey. The families of the Xerhorad hills kept her verdicts for a generation, which embarrassed them. A shepherd found her copper wire in the sill the following spring, bent into a ring, and used it as a bracelet for his daughter.
