Godfrey Proctor

Spy slayer of the Proctor (Yorkist) bloodline (House of Proctor), known as The Wary Cairn. Craft: Quiet Confrontation.

Godfrey Proctor was born in York in 1557, in the fourth year of Queen Mary's reign, into a city that still smelled of tanning pits and river mud and still argued over which of its saints had been thrown out of the minster. He was the son of Kit Dewhurst, a fuller who trod and beat wet cloth in a vat behind Fossgate, and of Joan Proctor, whom the White Ledger would later enter as a York notary's wife who took the mantle after her husband died. He grew up with the smell of stale urine and fuller's earth in his clothes, the ordinary stink of a wool town, and with a mother who kept her accounts in two hands: one for the parish, one for the ledger. He was the second of four brothers, after Lawrence Proctor, born in 1554, and before Blaise Proctor, born in 1558, and Kit Proctor, born in 1560. Their father died in 1561, when Godfrey was four, and the household was thereafter held together by Joan. York in those years was a place of guildhalls, wool markets and the great shadow of the minster close. The Merchant Adventurers had their hall on Fossgate, the smiths' and cutlers' crafts kept their own quarrels and feast days, and the Council of the North sat in the King's Manor with the authority of the Crown behind it. Religion changed twice before Godfrey could read: the Latin Mass came back under Mary and went again under Elizabeth in 1558, and the children of the city learned to keep their opinions behind their teeth. Prices rose, the harvest failed in bad years, and the river flooded the low streets by Ouse Bridge most springs. A boy who wished to eat learned a trade, and at about thirteen Godfrey was bound apprentice to a smith in a yard off Micklegate, where he spent seven years learning to draw iron, weld it, temper it, and shoe the oxen and carthorses that hauled wool in from the dales. He turned out to be good at it, in the patient, unshowy way that would mark everything he did. Smiths of the period lived by small commissions: hinges, hasps, chains, plough coulters, the iron rims of wheels, and now and then a lock that a merchant wanted made stubborn. Godfrey was known for his locks. He was a broad, slow-moving man with a burn scar across the back of his left hand and a habit of listening with his head a little to one side, so that customers assumed he was slightly deaf and said things in front of him they would not have said to a quicker-looking man. He took his freedom of the trade in the late 1570s and set up his own forge in a lane near the Shambles, sharing a wall with a chandler and a tripe-seller, and paying his rent in horseshoes when coin ran short. His mother's mantle came to him as a working knowledge before it came as a vocation. Joan Proctor, whom York's hunters knew as The Northern Assessor, had spent years in the trade of judging: she would walk into a village, look at its graves, its livestock and its lamps, and tell the parish which of its troubles were weather and which were not. She died in 1573, when Godfrey was sixteen, and the household ledgers passed through his brothers' hands more than his own. Lawrence kept the family accounts in the ordinary way, Blaise took to farming, and Kit found his living on the land. Godfrey, without meaning to, found himself the brother who kept his mother's habits: he noted the ground, kept quiet, and went on watching. The calling came in 1585, after a fire that burned a whole lane and left one door standing. It was a night in late autumn, dry and windy, and the blaze that started in a candlemaker's loft ran down a row of timber-framed houses in less than an hour. The city's bucket chains could do nothing. By morning eleven houses were black timber and ash, and one door, a plain oak door with a smith's hinge Godfrey himself had made, stood upright in the middle of the wreckage with nothing behind it. Nobody had been found inside the houses. That, more than the fire, was what unsettled him. He went back at dusk with a lantern, sat down against the standing door, and waited. What came out of the ruins was not a thing a fire could have driven off, and he met it with a hammer, a length of iron rod, and the calm his mother had passed down to him. He survived by knowing how to be quiet when everything in him wanted to shout. In the ledger the entry reads only that the door was left standing, and that the lane never gave up its dead. Once called, Godfrey became a vampire slayer of the White Ledger and took the alias The Wary Cairn, a name that was half a joke about his stubbornness and half a claim: a cairn is a heap of stones put up to mark something, and he meant to mark the things that had been done in the dark. He worked as a spy in the old sense, a watcher who read a place before he entered it. His craft, which the ledger calls Quiet Confrontation, was the skill of walking up to a creature without provoking it into rushing, holding its attention with a steady voice and an unhurried body until the light or the stake could do their work. It was not gentleness. It was patience made into a weapon, and it kept his fights short. For gear he carried a matchlock pistol, slow and unreliable in the wet, and hawthorn stakes he cut himself in the autumn and seasoned in the smoke of his own forge. Because no living slayer had taught him, he learned the trade from the White Ledger itself, reading the entries of his mother and of earlier Proctors by rushlight and copying the useful ones into a private notebook. He worked mostly within a day's walk of York: the wool markets at Tadcaster and Wetherby, the abbey ruins along the Ouse, and the villages below the Wolds where dry summers and empty barns gave a hunter room. In the summer of 1588 the Armada was sighted and the beacons went up along the coast, and York filled with rumour, drilled trainbands and muster-rolls. Godfrey spent that summer forging pike heads for the city's levy and, at night, worked the coast road towards Scarborough, where the panic over the Spanish had emptied the fishing hamlets and something had come in behind the panic. His entry for the season is one of the longest in his hand, and it records four vampires taken in as many weeks. He never married. The family remembered him as a bachelor by choice, or by circumstance, and both explanations were probably true: the forge, the hunting and the habit of solitude left no room in his life for a household of his own. His nephews, the children of Blaise and Kit, came and went from his shop, and he taught them to read a fire and a lock, though he did not teach them the ledger. He was the sort of uncle who kept sugar loaf in a drawer and refused to explain the scars on his forearms. The York guild recorded him as a respected master smith, and by the 1600s he had two apprentices and a little property near the Shambles. The rivalry with the Faulkners touched him lightly. He knew that Hugh Faulkner and Walter Proctor had opened their ledgers in 1455 and that the Guest had slipped away at Towton; every Proctor child was told so. But in his time the quarrel was a matter of Lancashire tallies read across the Pennines, of gossip carried by wool factors and pedlars, and of an occasional grudging courtesy when a Lancashire hunter and a Yorkshire one met at a fair. Godfrey kept his side of it by keeping his count honest and refusing to pad it. His ledger entries, alone among his generation's, distinguish between kills he saw and kills he only inferred. The early Stuart years were hard on York. Plague returned in 1604 and again later in the reign, hard winters killed livestock across the north, and the price of bread pinched the poor. Godfrey grew stiffer in the hands and slower on the road, and in his sixties he confined himself to the city and its immediate villages. He died in 1624 of a hard winter, aged 67, in the rooms above his forge, with his nephews around him. He was buried in the parish churchyard near the Shambles. The Slayerverse remembers him as The Wary Cairn, the watcher of the White Ledger, and the quiet stones he raised over the dark places of York are still counted among the steadiest entries in the Proctor tally.
