The first woman of the highlands to hold the mantle. Hanna-Zeru was a caravan-master's daughter who knew every well and stopping place between the Aksumite plateau and the Nile, and she held the mantle for 59 years.
She used what she knew. Along every major caravan road she set up a Lamp House: a stopping place with a bed, a meal, a store of salt and a trained watcher behind the counter. Travellers saw an inn. The Pride saw a chain of eyes and refuges that let any slayer cross the highlands without being seen. By her death, there were more than forty Lamp Houses, and no brood could move a caravan through the kingdom without being noticed.
What she left behind: the Lamp Houses, which outlived the kingdom that held them.
