Harold Kalteyer Proctor

Spy slayer of the Proctor (Yorkist) bloodline (House of Proctor), known as The Quiet Weir. Craft: Cross-Examination.

Harold Kalteyer Proctor was born in 1957 at Birmingham, Alabama, and is living today at Memphis, Tennessee, where he has worked for most of his life as a postal clerk and, since 1978, as a vampire slayer of the White Ledger. The family book knows him as The Quiet Weir, the low wall across a stream that does nothing but hold the water level, and classes him as a Spy, a hunter who works by cover, patience and the quiet collection of what other people say when they think no one is listening. His craft is Cross-Examination, the old Proctor art of putting one question to a witness in three different dresses until the truth comes out in one of them, and his gear is a service pistol and a silver-edged knife. He is the elder son of the diner cook Lloyd Kalteyer and of the hospital cook Mary Proctor Navarro, and the brother of Derek Proctor Kalteyer, born in 1960 and dead in 2026. In 1984 he married the bookkeeper Colleen Evans, born in 1962 and dead in 2025, and they had one daughter, Cynthia Evans Proctor, who was born in 1985 and was not called. He is of the House of Proctor and descends from Thomas Faulkner and Isabel Proctor, who married in January 1486. He was born in Birmingham and not in San Antonio because his mother went east to be confined. In the winter of 1957 the Westside house was crowded and watched. Raymond Proctor Navarro, her young brother, had found that a sleeper had been using the lane behind the Navarro yard, and Harriet Proctor, who ran that household like a barracks, sent her eldest daughter away on the Greyhound with a basket, a letter and a rule that she was not to come home until the matter was settled. The letter was to Evelyn Bowie Proctor, the seamstress of the Birmingham hills and a cousin of the Ledger, who kept a spare room and a midwife she trusted. Mary, who was twenty-six and expecting her first, was put in the room over the sewing machine, and Harold was born there in the first cold week of the new year with a tape measure on the bedpost. Lloyd Kalteyer, who could not leave his flat-top, came by bus for the weekend and stood in the passage with his apron still in his pocket. Mother and child were back in San Antonio by Easter. It is a story that the family tells to explain two things about Harold: that he is the one Proctor who always had an Alabama cousin, and that he is the only one who has never been surprised by a sewing machine. He grew up in the barrio on the south side, behind the diner, in a house that smelled of bacon and coffee, and he was a slow, serious, watchful boy who would sit under the pass-through for an hour listening to the customers. His father, who had never been told more than he needed, saw him at it and said that the boy was a natural at the back table. His uncle Raymond, who was called in 1968, took him out when he was eleven along the old mission ditches, and taught him the gates and the sluices, and his mother, who packed the lunch, put in an extra boiled egg. But the craft, when it came, was not Raymond's. It was an inheritance from the other side of the family. His mother's aunt, the seamstress and slayer Elizabeth Proctor, The Winter Yoke, who had died in 1963, had left a notebook of questions, and his grandmother Harriet, who held it for the family, put it into the boy's hands at fourteen without a word. It was in a plain small hand. It began with the instruction to trust the third answer. He was called in 1978, at twenty-one, after a fire that burned a whole lane and left one door standing. He had by then taken a place at the post office in Memphis, a clerkship at the main sorting floor, where a letter from a cousin of the Ledger had got him the post, and he lived in a room near Overton Park with a hot plate and a very good map. The fire came on a night in October. A lane of frame houses behind the freight yards, eleven in all, went up in under an hour, with a wind, and all the families got out, and when the fire crews had finished there was a single door, with its frame, standing in the black with nothing behind it. A neighbour said that someone had been seen to go in at that door after the roof fell. Harold went the next morning, because it was on his round, and found the letter box on the door still full. Every house in the lane had been addressed to someone who was not on the rolls. He spent six weeks asking one question of every person who had lived within a mile, in the manner of a clerk who has lost a parcel. It was asked three ways. In the third, an old woman remembered, quite without being prompted, that the man at number nine had never once collected his mail. The creature, which had been drawing its income from the dead letter office of a tenement, was taken in a cold railway shed in December. Cousins did the shooting. He told them where. The Spy is a hunter of cover, and a post office is the best cover that the Deep South allows. A clerk who sorts the mail sees the name, the address, the postmark and the weight, and notices, without wishing to, which house gets nothing and which gets a hundred letters in an envelope the same colour. He asked his questions across the counter, as a man asks who has a queue behind him and does not much care for the answer, and he wrote the answers on the back of a postal form, which no one on earth ever looked at. In forty-five years he took, by the family's count, twenty-three. He fired in three of those cases, and, as he says, the first time was an accident and the others a matter of arithmetic. He met Colleen Evans at the Memphis post office counter in 1982, where she was posting a bundle of freight envelopes and he, as the clerk, told her that one of them had been sealed twice, a small, red-haired, sharp-tongued young woman of twenty who could add a column of figures and carry on a conversation about a hymn at the same time. She told him that his deposit was a dollar short. He said that he had counted it twice. She said that he had counted it three ways, and that the third had been wrong. He was told on the spot to take her to dinner. They were married in the spring of 1984, in the church on Poplar Avenue, with his brother Derek, who had come from San Antonio, standing up beside him, and her family, who were Baptists, seated on the other side of the aisle and visibly curious about the Texans. She was told the truth in the second year, by Harold, in a car, in the rain, and she asked whether he would at least be home for Sunday lunch. He has been. She kept the books of two small firms, and the household's, and a second set, in a ledger of her own, in which every night out was entered with the time and the lamp-post it began at. Cynthia Evans Proctor was born in 1985, and her mother saw to it that she was told nothing until she had learned to read. His own parents had grown old in the meanwhile. Lloyd died in 1989, of a fall in the diner's storeroom, and Harold, who drove to San Antonio overnight, found his mother in the corridor of her hospital with a spoon in her pocket. She lived until 2007. In the years that followed he took in the Vietnam veterans on his postal round who could not sleep, the widows who got no letters and, in September 2001, a woman who had walked down from the airport with no shoes, and he said nothing of what he saw. In the pandemic years he delivered by day and made his enquiries through a window, in a mask, by telephone. It was in the pandemic, in 2020, that Colleen, who had been a bookkeeper to the last, began to tire. She died in 2025, in the autumn, at sixty-three, and he went back to the post office on the Monday, and the supervisor, who had known him for thirty years, asked what he needed. He said that he needed a window. He lives alone now in the house in Memphis, with his daughter in the next suburb and a drawing of Colleen's hymn book pinned to the refrigerator. His brother Derek, who had been a coach in San Antonio, died in 2026, and Harold went to the funeral and sat in the back and said very little to anyone, as the family says is his habit. At sixty-nine he is still on the counter three days a week, the oldest clerk in the building. He says that he does not intend to retire until someone asks him a question that he cannot answer. Harold Kalteyer Proctor is remembered in the Proctor family as the quiet clerk of the White Ledger, the hunter who stood at a post office counter and asked a question three ways until the dead gave themselves away. In the Slayerverse he stands for the hunters who work by patience and politeness, who never raise a voice, and who prove that a weir, which only holds still and keeps the level, can in the end turn a whole river.
