Jadea Supraita

Jadea Supraita, The Bloodless Marrow, was a broker of the Velvet Throne who ran the grain trade of three Indian rivers for four centuries in the Bronze Vigil. She lent seed against knotted cords and collected the interest in blood, until a thief with lightning in his skin burned her counting house.

Every knot in a tally cord meant something, and Jadea Supraita could read forty thousand of them with her left hand while her right held a cup. The cords hung in her counting houses from the rafters in bundles, each bundle a village, each knot a measure of seed lent or a measure owed, and the dry sound of them moving in a draft was, she said once to a clerk, the only music she had ever found trustworthy. The farmers of the Indus and Ganges Plain called her The Bloodless Marrow. They did not say it in front of the cords. She had been born in 1544 BCE at Vipraita, a walled city-state on the river in what is now India, in a house that lent seed for a living long before she lent it for a different price. Her father kept the household books and her mother kept the household's temper, and the child who grew up between them learned that a debt was the most reliable thing a person could own, because it outlived harvests, floods and kings. She could do sums in her head before she could be trusted with a knife. At fourteen she corrected her father's ledger in front of a customer. He beat her for it and then promoted her, which was the sort of household it was. What she wanted from the beginning was simple to state and impossible to finish: every debt on the plain written down, and every cord in a single hand. The war found her at twenty-eight, in 1516 BCE, in a copper-buyer's rented room above the east gate. The buyer had come down the trade road from the Yellow River Basin that autumn with a string of mules and a pleasant way of asking questions, and he was called Tangqin Zhao, though the quays at Vipraita knew him as The Midnight Widow, for reasons nobody there could explain. He stayed a season. He watched her work, asked what she would do with unlimited time, and she told him, honestly, that she would finish the book. He made her what he was that night, in the same room. It was not gentle. When she woke she was hungry in a way no meal had ever described, and her sire was gone from the city by morning, with the mules, and she never saw him again. Whatever became of Tangqin Zhao afterward, she was not told, and she did not ask. A broker's way of being a vampire is not the way of a hunter or a lord. Jadea Supraita joined the Velvet Throne within the year, because the Throne dealt in obligations and she could see the use of them, and she rose by being the person in the room who knew who owed what. She lent seed against a tally and took her interest where nobody liked to look: a cup of blood now and then from the debtor's household, a child left pale and sleepy for a week. The Bronze Vigil at that time was a loose league of headmen and ferrymen, and they knew perfectly well what the grain broker on three rivers was. They also needed the grain. For centuries the arrangement held. She had a gift, and the gift suited her trade. It lived in her throat, a low hum under the voice, and when she used it the air in a room agreed to show people her several times over. She called it Mirror Legion because a clerk had once said the room looked like a legion of herself, and she liked the sound of it. The copies were light and nothing more, but they moved, they spoke, they raised the same knotted cord with the same hand, and a person looking at them could not tell by eye which woman cast a shadow. It cost her thirst, sharply, afterward. Her body took blows well, better than most. Fire and salt were the other matter. She would not step across a line of salt laid on a threshold, and she kept her counting houses stone-floored and her lamps in iron cages, because she had seen what a burning granary does to a vampire. She was four hundred years into the trade before the thief came. In 1116 BCE a vampire slayer named Dhaniini Takaan dropped through the roof hatch of her chief granary house at Dhamaa, which was where the night market ran. He was twenty, with hair standing straight out from his head and light crawling on his forearms, and he had come to steal a bundle of cords. She had eleven of herself at eleven boards when he fell in. The thief had no name for what he faced and threw lightning at the nearest, and it passed through her without leaving a mark, and then at the next. It was at the fifth copy that the hum in her throat stuttered and four of the women simply stopped being there. She noticed that. She said to him, "You leave a measure on the doorstep. I have wondered who." She broke his spear across her knee and let him go down the wall, because a thief who talked was worth more than a corpse. It was a mistake, and she would describe it as the only one of her career. The next seven years were a lesson in what a ledger is worth. Dhaniini stole her tally cords, bundle by bundle, and burned them in the open, so that whole villages woke owing nothing, and nothing she did to the villages brought the debts back, because a debt that nobody remembers is not a debt. She had children in her service, and he found them and sent them home. She tried the copies in the dark and discovered that his charge broke the hum. She tried bribing the Vigil, whose headmen took her grain and gave her nothing. In the end she moved the last of her tallies to a river market called Mavia, a plain storehouse packed to the rafters with barley and chaff, and she told herself it was a stronghold. She did have a childe once, a thief named Praini Niardhaa, whom she turned in 1493 BCE and who died at Deniesh in 1477 BCE, under a falling house, with a slayer beside her. Jadea did not mourn. She noted it in the book, which she would not have done for a daughter. She outlived the girl by three and a half centuries and never made another. She died at Mavia in 1109 BCE, at four hundred and thirty-five. He let it be known that he had found her cords, and she came alone to fetch them, as he had guessed she would. The salt was laid across both doors, and she saw it, and understood it only after it could help her. She made eleven of herself, which was no use. He threw everything he had into the dry dust in the air, and the storehouse burned until morning. In the Vampireverse she is remembered as a creditor, not a killer, which she would have taken as the correct order. In the villages along the three rivers, people still leave one knot out of a new cord, so that the count never quite closes.
