They found him at the ford below Tania in 2700 BCE, face down in reed-water with his oxhide shield gone and his stake still in his belt, and the villagers who pulled him out said afterward that it was the first time they had ever seen Majaini Yuyuesh without a roof of sky over his head and a mat under his back. He was fifty-five. He had been a slayer of the Vigil of Indus and Ganges Plain for twenty-five years, he was known in the villages from the marshes to the river towns as The Salt Vow, and he had died within sight of the house he was born in, which nobody has ever decided was carelessness. His own sister, who washed him, said it was an appointment. He was born in 2755 BCE at Tania, a marsh village of reed houses on stilts, in India's wet country, and for most of the early years of the war he was nobody anyone would remember. He fished, he poled boats, and by his twenties, as an assassin in all but the word he used for it (he said "collector"), he sold his knife to the river cults who needed a quiet man to collect what was owed, which in The First Night was the standard route out of a marsh for a boy with good hands and no land. He was good at it for one reason. He had always known when people were lying. It came as a pressure behind the ears, a faint flat ring like a struck clay bowl, and as a young man he assumed everyone felt it and chose to say nothing. In 2725 BCE, when he was thirty, a feeding party came to the house where he lodged with his brother's family and left nobody alive but him. He was in the cistern under the floor, hiding from a debtor, and he listened to all of it through the brick. What woke in him that night was not a power he could name. The pressure behind his ears opened out. For the first time he heard not only that a person lied but what the lie was covering, a sort of weather in the skull, and at the moment he understood it was Lie Breaker he was bleeding from the nose. Nobody taught him. No teacher was left, and the Vigil, when it found him, had no one to send. He stood in the burned yard with a handful of salt from the household jar, put it in his mouth, and swore on it that he would not again sleep under a roof until the thing that ordered this was ended. That was the Salt Vow. He kept it for twenty-five years, rolled in an oxhide on a reed mat, even in monsoon, and it gave him the permanent cough his enemies counted on. In the Slayerverse the Vigil's few surviving records call him the best vampire slayer of his decade at finding what he could not see, and he would have found that funny, since he never found anything he could not hear first. Majaini Yuyuesh worked alone and he worked by listening. A slayer with Lie Breaker could walk into a market and know in an afternoon which stall-keeper was selling to the House, and he put out the nests that way: seven of them over the years, in cellars, in a dry tomb, in the big cistern under a dyers' quarter. He carried an oxhide shield and a stake with a notched copper cap. The gift cost him dearly, and he knew exactly how much. A crowd made his head ring until he vomited. He avoided festivals. Women who liked him found that he could not stay in a room when they were pretending to be fine. He never could read the vampires well, and that puzzled him for years. Their minds were quiet, and quiet in the wrong way. It was not the quiet of the sleeper but of a closed door. In 2713 BCE, in the night market at Vitania, he met the vampire who would end him. Suraa Javiini, The Crowned Regent of that market, was a hunter before she was anything else, and she did not hurry. He followed her through the dyers' lane for most of an evening, and when the lane ended in a stone channel of running water laid across a doorway she stopped, and that was how he learned that she would not cross it. He pressed the capped end of the stake, heated in a brazier, to her forearm. The skin around it did not close. He had been told that nothing killed these people quickly, and he had never been told they could be marked. She left through the crowd with her sleeve over her arm, and he sat for an hour afterward in the lane, shaking, listening to nobody. It was thirteen years of that: he read her agents, she left his villages alone, and the mark on her arm stayed raw. He should have understood what that meant. His sister said later that he did, and that the cough was the least of what he kept to himself. He wanted one thing, to find the person who gave the order for the feeding party, and he suspected by then that the order had been given in a market, by a woman with a circlet of copper and reed on her head, and that his wanting it was the one thing she could count on. A patient hunter who is hurt once does not forget which man did it. In 2700 BCE a dying fisherman reached Tania with a story that a nest of the House was digging in beneath the ford. The man believed every word. Lie Breaker rang for none of it, and Majaini went out alone at dusk, which was exactly what his sister would have forbidden, and found Suraa Javiini standing in the shallows with the water running around her feet and no door to cross. She had planned a lie so sincere that he could not break it, and she killed him there. His sister buried him in the marsh mud with a pinch of salt in his mouth.
