Maud Hebblethwaite

Spouse of Ambrose Proctor, married into the Proctor (Yorkist) line from a local family.

Maud Hebblethwaite learned to read a fermenting vat the way other girls learned to read a face. She was born in 1498 at Tadcaster, in Yorkshire, the old market town on the River Wharfe where the limestone for York Minster had been quarried and where the water, hard and cold and sweet, made some of the best ale in the county. Her family are not named in the White Ledger; they were people of the brewhouse, a household of malt-sacks and coppers and mash-tuns, and she was raised in a steam that never quite left her hair. By seven she was carrying water. By twelve she was trusted to judge when a wort had cooled enough to take the yeast, and by fifteen she could tell from a sniff at the door whether a batch had gone wrong. Brewing in her day was women's work in most English towns, and Tadcaster was no exception. A brewster, as the law called her, was licensed by the manor court, fined if her measures were short, and liable to be hauled up before the ale-taster if her brew was weak, thin, sour or late. Maud had no patience with any of it and a great deal of respect for the ale-taster, who she held to be the only honest official in the parish. She kept her measures true and her barrels clean, and the local court seldom had cause to fine her. She was big, broad-shouldered and loud, with hands like spades and a laugh that could be heard in the yard, and she ran her small brewhouse as a captain runs a ship. She met Ambrose Proctor at a fair, some say at Tadcaster and some at Wetherby, where he had come on tanyard business and where she was selling a barrel of her best. He asked for a cup he did not want and stayed for three more. He was a tanner, heavy and cheerful, and smelled of oak bark under the ale. She said afterwards that a man who smelled of something he had honestly made was better than one who smelled of nothing. They were married in 1520, in the year Ambrose's mother died, and she moved the twelve miles to Wetherby with her coppers on a cart and the particular determination of a woman who means her business to come with her. The household she entered was a curious one. Ambrose's mother, Agnes Barlow, had been a spinner, and also a vampire slayer known as The Wary Bell, a fact that Maud learned within a week of the wedding. Ambrose's brother John Proctor had stood at the funeral with a sealed book and told the family what it was. Maud, who had expected a tanner's family and found a slayer family, took the news the way she took a bad batch: she looked at it, counted the cost, and went to work. She asked a single question, which was whether the arrangement endangered her children, and being told that it need not, as long as certain doors stayed shut after dark, she shut them. She became, in her quiet way, the household's keeper of the practical side of the White Ledger's work: the beds, the bread, the cask of strong ale in the cellar for a hunter coming off a cold watch. Her brewhouse sat behind the tanyard, which gave the Proctor yard at Wetherby two competing smells, and the town was divided as to which was worse. She brewed small ale for the household and strong for the market, and sold to the inns on the Great North Road, where the carters and drovers drank. She came to know a great deal. An alehouse is a crossroads of gossip, and a brewster who delivers to six of them hears of strangers, of unquiet lanes, of cattle that will not go past certain walls. She never wrote any of it down; she carried it, in the way of the trade, in her head, and passed it on to John or to his brother Nicholas over a cup on a Sunday evening. Some of the White Ledger's best leads of that generation came from the gossip of her delivery round. Her children were Gilbert Proctor, born in 1522, Bridget Proctor, born in 1525, and Humphrey Proctor, born in 1529. She raised them without sentiment and without any harshness either. Gilbert and Bridget she taught to brew and to keep accounts. Humphrey she watched more closely, because by his early teens he had begun to look at the dark in a way that she recognised from the stories of Agnes Barlow, and one winter night she found him sitting up with a bow that was not his and a look she knew. She did not forbid it. She went to the cellar, fetched a cup of the strong ale, and put it in his hands. He understood that she had made peace with it, and that the peace had cost her something. He became a slayer, and she never once asked to be told what he saw. The years of the northern risings, 1536 and 1537, tried her hard. It was a bad time for a woman who sold ale to every kind of traveller, for every customer was suspect to someone and every cup could be reported. Maud kept the doors of the brewhouse open to rebel and royal alike, charged them the same for the same cup, and used the mash-tun as a place to think. She said that a house which sold to everyone and belonged to no one was the safest place in the north, and in that winter she was right. Her husband, who had a tanner's mild approach to danger, thought she was courting trouble. She told him that trouble had come to the door whether or not it was courted, and that it might as well be served. By the middle of the century she was a stout woman of fifty, with grey streaks in her hair and a voice that had not softened. The long years of religious upheaval under the Tudor crown, from 1549 to 1560, reached the brewhouse as they reached every parish: new prayers, old grievances, and an ale-taster who was more anxious than before. She watched the Faulkner and Proctor rivalry from the edge, in the way of someone who had married into a quarrel older than her own name. She had heard of the Guest and Towton and the old Wars of the Roses only from her husband, and she regarded the whole question of who had let the creature pass as a dispute between two sets of men who would each rather be right than rested. When Ambrose died in 1561, after a wasting illness, she closed the tanyard for exactly one day, and then reopened it. Her last years were spent in the brewhouse, in a chair by the copper, giving instructions to the next generation of brewsters who had stopped listening. She had seen her husband's brother Nicholas out of the world, and then her husband, and the family she had married into was growing thinner. She died in 1565, in a hard winter, when the Wharfe froze at the edges and the lanes were shut with snow, in her own bed above the brewhouse, with the smell of malt in the walls. She was sixty-seven. The family said that she had waited until the last barrel of the autumn brew was drawn and had then simply stopped. Maud Hebblethwaite is remembered in the Proctor family as the brewster who kept the house fed and the doors shut, and as the woman who taught a slayer family that a cellar and a kitchen were as much a part of the war as a bow. She never carried a stake, and the White Ledger has no tally against her name, but later keepers noted that every hunter who passed through Wetherby in her time left with a full stomach and a clearer head. In the Slayerverse she stands for the household strength behind the hunt: the warm room, the strong cup, and the hand that asks nothing and understands everything.
