Muipa Lamuus

Muipa Lamuus, the Eternal Envoy, was a Scientist of the Bronze Vigil, a temple astronomer from Shahatili turned in 1499 BCE who spent 296 years carrying the Winter Brood's business between Anatolian courts. A vampire slayer named Arpia Yawaili destroyed her in 1203 BCE.

The rumor in the Anatolian courts was that the Eternal Envoy had been sent as a bride to a king who died before she arrived, and that she had been traveling ever since with a sealed letter from his corpse. It is a good story, and clerks told it for generations, and none of it is true. Muipa Lamuus was born in 1526 BCE in Shahatili, a walled city-state on the plateau, the daughter of a lamp-oil seller, and the only sealed things she ever carried were other people's. What she was, before she was an envoy, was a scientist in the only sense the age had one: a girl who could be trusted to count. The temple of Shahatili took her at twelve, and by twenty she was keeping its tablets of star-risings and eclipse reckonings, and she could say within a night when the moon would hide. Muipa Lamuus was a scientist, whatever else the Anatolian courts took her for, and she worked in what is now Turkey in the years of the Bronze Vigil. She was twenty-seven when it ended. A lover in the same temple, another keeper of the tablets, swore before the board that she had altered an eclipse count to flatter a patron, and since the count had been wrong in a way that frightened a king she was to be put out on the road with nothing. That was the night she met Shaa Arrutias, who was Anatolian like her and old beyond reckoning, and who offered her a different road. She took it in 1499 BCE. She was not coaxed and she did not pretend, later, that she had been. What she wanted was never to be made a fool of by a count again, and a long life, she reasoned, was the only way to see all the counts come out. Shaa Arrutias made her. He sent her out afterward, seldom called her back, and outlived her; she never made childer of her own. The Winter Brood, which she joined, was not an army. It wanted what an astronomer could give it: when a town's cistern would be lowest, which nights had no moon, which road would be empty when the harvest tax went up to the capital. Muipa gave it all of that, and then she gave it the means to get to it. She became an envoy. Embassies between the city-states of the plateau were constant and tedious, treaties over wells and tolls and who owed whom a tribute of horses, and any town that sent a tall, patient woman with good tablets and a clay seal of safe-conduct was glad of her. She did not sleep on the road, she did not eat in company, and she explained both by saying that she was fasting for a god nobody could name. For almost three centuries nobody asked twice. The Vampireverse has one account of her end, and it names the vampire slayer Arpia Yawaili and the year 1203 BCE. She had the gift she called, to herself, the Red Tide. It was not elaborate. Where there was blood standing in a vessel she could lift it and move it, and on a good night with enough to work with, say a slaughter trough or the floor of a butcher's shed, she could throw it as a flat wall at the height of a man's head. It cost her. Afterward her hands went dead to the wrist, her teeth ached with cold, and she was hungry in a way she found humiliating. She mostly used it for emphasis and for escape. Her weaknesses were not secrets by then. A silver-tipped weapon went into her where bronze did not. Salt laid across a doorway made the threshold a wall she could not make herself cross, and she kept a boy in each of her households to check the doors. She first saw the vampire slayer at the caravan stop of Kukuaripa in 1234 BCE. She was traveling with a minor embassy toward the coast and she had stepped down to stretch her legs in the dusk when she saw a man in the yard with an oxhide shield on his arm and a stake in his fist, chewing something. The Brood had warned of him, in its way. A man in the levy, burned and left for dead, who stood up from the ash and could not be cut. She put her hand on the slaughter trough and threw the blood at him and watched it split his shield, and then it was almost light and she had to go. What she remembered, though, was the stake. Ash, silver at the tip, filed by someone who knew what they were doing. She thought, with some satisfaction, that a man who worked so well with so little was going to be a nuisance. He was. The name she gave him, in the reports she sent north, was the Bright Thorn. He followed her for thirty-one years. She came to know the rhythm of it: she would arrive in a town under the king's seal, he would arrive a day behind her with salt on his back, and the town would feel that something had passed through, like weather. She could have killed him a dozen times if she had been willing to leave a town burning, and she was not willing, because a burning town draws the levy and the levy draws the king. At the Tuwanaripa salt pans in 1221 BCE he took one of her couriers, and she lost two seasons of reckonings and had to start the cistern counts again from nothing. That annoyed her more than the shield had. She began to dread, almost fondly, the sound of a man humming a counting song that never got past the same number. The end came at Pilaaripa, a hill town with a cistern under its lower terrace, where she had wintered in 1203 BCE as the widow of a merchant. She knew he had found her before he did anything, because the salt came into the cistern's three doorways as a thin dry hiss in the night. She went to the foot of the shaft and called his name and offered terms, which were generous: the Brood's silence about the plateau for as long as he lived. He did not answer. She opened the water and filled the vault with it, and when she reached through the flood for him the silver-tipped stake went in under her ribs, and she understood, with a clarity she had expected to enjoy more, that the count had finally come out in his favour. She was destroyed on that night in 1203 BCE. She was 323. Her clay tablets of cistern depths were found years after in a jar behind the wall of the house at Pilaaripa, and a scribe who could read them recognized the hand and said nothing, because the towns whose wells were on them were still in use, and he lived in one.
