The woman who took a queen's name. In 1622, an African queen travelled to the Portuguese port of Luanda and refused to kneel at the governor's feet. She sat on the back of one of her attendants, so that she would not be below him. The Pride was watching, and so was a young woman from the royal household, a trained watcher who had spent her life in the shadows of the court. When Luzia-Mbanza died two years earlier, the mantle had been waiting for her.
The Pride gave her the name Nzinga-Maahes in homage to the queen. The queen was never a Maahes. She was a ruler and a fighter, and the Pride honoured her. For 55 years, the woman who bore her name did the quiet work beside the queen's loud one.
She followed the queen's fighters into the war that followed. When the kingdom of Ndongo was driven out of its capital, she moved with the queen to Matamba. Wherever the Portuguese took captives, she was the one who found the places where the brood was waiting among the ships and the stockades, and she broke them. Wherever she could, she opened the doors of the pens and sent the people into the hills.
She did not stop the trade. No one in her lifetime could. But thousands lived who would not have, because she was there.
The queen died in 1663. Nzinga-Maahes carried on for another fourteen years. She was killed in 1677, in a night fight at a river crossing, holding a ford so that a column of freed captives could cross behind her. She was the oldest Maahes of the darkest age, and she had spent her resin a spoonful at a time so that she would be alive to do it.
What she left behind: the ford, the memory of it, and a method of fighting for people who could not fight for themselves. The Matamba Oath grew from it after her death.
