Piipa Tishashaili

Piipa Tishashaili, the Silent Shadow, was a grain merchant turned vampire broker of the Ivory Court in Anatolia. He outlived the slayer who scarred him by nearly three centuries, then simply stopped appearing in 2043 BCE, leaving a marsh, a granary and a trail of unpaid debts behind.

In the long dark of The First Night there was a piece of cord that a Vampireverse chronicler once described, knotted at intervals like a farmer's tally of days. Each knot, said the chronicler, was a wound that Piipa Tishashaili had survived and could no longer feel. There were many knots. There were also two places on his body that he could not account for with any knot at all: a black burn on the inside of the left forearm, and another across the jaw. Both were laid there by a vampire slayer, and neither ever closed. He wore his sleeves long and kept his chin down, and in three centuries of business almost no one asked him why. The first of the three places he worked was Mutuili, a marsh village in Anatolia, in what is now Turkey, where he was born in 2369 BCE and where he was a grain merchant of some ambition and no luck. In 2336 BCE, aged thirty-three, he ran from creditors and hid in the cellar of a house he took to be empty. It belonged to Shaa Arrutias, the Velvet Architect, who made him a vampire that night, for reasons Piipa never fully learned and never stopped examining. The man did not ask him to become anything. Shaa wanted a clerk who understood grain, and an intelligence that already thought in debts. Piipa joined the Ivory Court and learned the quiet manners of the thing: keep the lamp low, feed rarely and from the well-off, never be seen twice at the same door. Shaa Arrutias is alive today. He has never, so far as the sources say, explained himself to any of the vampires he made. The second place was Titaryaa, the temple town upriver, whose storehouses held the barley the whole district lived on. This was where Piipa became the Silent Shadow. A broker in that country did not need fangs; he needed a steward who owed him a favor and a clerk who was afraid of him. He lent barley against next year's harvest, bought up notes of debt, and kept a small circle of informants inside the temple guard, so that he knew who patrolled the granary and when. His body helped him. The gift called Wound Ledger closed his injuries in a few breaths, as though the flesh itself were checking a tally, and he paid for it with a hunger so sharp afterward that he would not sit across a table from anyone he meant to leave alive. There he met Pishaipa Tutartuas, the Crimson Warden of the Vigil of Anatolia, in 2324 BCE, in the barley store behind the temple. He had offered her beer. She had answered by lighting the room. He did not think of her first as an enemy but as a strange new fact. Her Static Halo froze him as he stood, and she laid the hot copper of her dagger along his forearm before the room went dark. Everything else the Ledger repaired in front of her. That mark stayed. He studied it for years in his own way, the way a man studies a bad harvest, and what he learned from it he did not tell the Court. Slayers could mark a vampire's skin so that the body would not mend it. That was a vulnerability, and it was the sort of thing that ended careers, so he guarded it. He also learned something about her. She was predictable. She went to the places she believed she could defend. So he took away her friends rather than her life. He had the debts of her kin and her neighbors bought, a few at a time, by men he never needed to meet, until the people she protected began to avoid her. When she finally came for him, she came to Mutuili, where he had a grain-house with a single door. She had driven four iron nails into the sill, which had cost her more than he wanted to guess. He read that as a compliment and entered through the reed roof. The fight was close, and she put a second mark across his jaw before it was done. In 2321 BCE, in the dark, Piipa Tishashaili killed her. It was not a thing he cared to describe afterward, and he never did. He kept the iron nails in the sill untouched and moved his trade elsewhere. The third place was Kuruwanta, a caravan town at a pass in the hills where three trade roads crossed, and where, he did the quietest and most profitable work of his life. A broker there sold access: who could pass, whose donkeys were held, what a cargo of tin was worth to a man who had not seen it. He carried his long sleeves and a rule that he never accepted payment in a form that could be traced to him. He was still the Silent Shadow, and over time he became something like a fixture, the odd pale man in the corner of the courtyard with a cord at his belt. His one indulgence was to hum under his breath while he calculated, a thin marsh tune he had picked up as a child, and traders who heard it learned to stop talking. In 2077 BCE he made his own childe, Hattuus Pitarili, who would become known as the Weeping Marrow. It was the only time he copied what had been done to him, and by every account he did it badly, with too little warning and no explanation, in the same cold manner in which Shaa had taken him. He taught the younger vampire everything about debt and nothing about patience. Hattuus learned the first lesson and not the second. Piipa Tishashaili disappeared in 2043 BCE, aged three hundred and twenty-six, at an age by which he had already outlived almost every person who could have testified against him. He did not die in any way that anyone recorded. He was seen at Kuruwanta at the turn of a season and was not seen at the next. His room held a clay jar of barley, a rolled mat, and the knotted cord, which someone later said had one more knot than it should have, though no one agreed on how many it ought to have held. The mark on his arm, if it was still there, went with him.
