The river towns told it this way. Praini Dhaaresh, they said, had been struck by lightning on the wall of Bhataesh, and had got up with the sky still in him, which was why his hair stood out and why the air smelled like a hot copper pot when he got angry. It is a good story and nobody has ever managed to kill it. It is also wrong in every detail but the smell. No lightning struck him. He was a thirty-three-year-old spear-bearer who had been born with a body that stored charge, the way some people store fat, and who spent the first third of his life being told it was a rash. Praini Dhaaresh was born in 2069 BCE inside Bhataesh, a walled city-state on the Indus and Ganges plain, in what is now India, to a family of brick-carriers who lived under the east wall. The charge showed early. Sparks cracked off his fingers in dry months, the hair on his arms stood up before storms, and the other children found it funny until he lost his temper. Then it stopped being funny. As a young man Praini signed on as a berserker of the line, one of the wall troops who went in first and screamed, a stormer in the old sense of the word, and he was good at it for reasons that had nothing to do with courage. He did not tell the officers why their shields sometimes shocked their wrists. He wanted, in those years, to be taken seriously by someone, and being the loudest man on the wall was the cheapest route. The thing that changed it was a siege, in 2036 BCE. Bhataesh was surrounded for a month by raiders who never seemed to tire, led by a captain who took a spear through the chest from Praini's own hand on the eighth night and walked on through the gap, still talking. Praini stood on the wall afterward with the stone-tipped spear in his fists and understood that he had been fighting something other than men. He was called to the work then, at thirty-three, as a vampire slayer of the Vigil of Indus and Ganges Plain, in The Bronze Vigil's long middle years, and joined what the Slayerverse would later call its first line of lanterns. He had no mentor. He taught himself by finding out what hurt the captain's kind, and the city taught him by sending him out again. The ability that carried him was the Chain Lightning Vow. It worked like this: for days at a time, the charge built in his body until his fingertips stung, and when he drove the spear into a target the stored force jumped from his hand through the shaft, into the wound and onward into anyone touching it. Each discharge left his palms blistered and his teeth aching. A second one in the same day was dangerous. Before every release he spoke aloud the name of someone who had died, a dead brick-carrier, a dead friend, a dead child in the street, and said that this one was theirs. He called it the vow. He kept a count in his head, and it went well past two hundred by the end. The Vigil, because he carried a clay lamp to light the way into cellars and kept it burning even in daylight, began to call him the Gilded Lantern. His campaigns were short, expensive and local. In 2035 BCE, a year into the work, he followed a trail of dying cattle down the river to the village of Nipraa and found the cause. A soldier of the Midnight Assembly was using the village as a larder, and Praini was the first slayer in memory to catch Aryuini Bhavian at it. He had the spear, the lamp and thirty seconds of surprise. The vampire answered with a low, rising dread that came up through the floor, and Praini, who had never felt it before, found himself standing at the threshold of a hut he could not make himself enter. He was driven back down the river stair. It took him nine nights of watching to decide the thing could be beaten and another three to decide how. Over the next eleven years the pursuit became his life. He broke four covens along the Ganges, at a ford called Kotlai, a granary town, a pottery quarter and a cremation ground, and at each one he found a trace of the same soldier: a salt-stained boot, a clay seal pressed into a doorframe, a rumor about someone who kept to the edge of the light. They fought a dozen times in all. He lost a toe, three teeth and most of his hearing in one ear. Aryuini Bhavian lost a hand to the spear's shock, and it grew back wrong. He came to understand that the opponent was not a monster in the ordinary sense. It was a person who had been given one skill, which was standing still in a doorway, and had made a career of it. The end came in 2024 BCE at Prayuini, a river town where the Assembly kept a warehouse. Praini had spent the dry season salting every threshold in the quarter, line after line, until the soldier had only one way out, and he waited in it with the lamp. It was not dignified. The soldier was cornered, ragged and shaking with fear that for once ran the other way, and Praini, forty-five, spoke the vow, named the name, and drove the spear home. The charge went through the body and into the salted floor. He sat down on the threshold afterward for a long time, with his palms in a bucket, and did not say who the name had been for. He lived one more year, of nothing in particular. A fever took him in 2023 BCE at the age of forty-six, in Bhataesh, in the house under the east wall, with the clay lamp on the sill. His neighbors said that the night he died the air in the street smelled faintly of hot copper, which was nonsense, since it was a cold night. The lamp was carried to the Vigil house and set in the window of the room where new slayers slept, and the oil in it was changed each month.
