Ruipa Tirurua

Ruipa Tirurua, the Weeping Whisper, was a Crimson Circle spy of the Bronze Vigil who learned to make a whole market forget her face. A vampire slayer named Lawaipa Lamuus found a way around that smile, and in 1154 BCE the sun finished the argument.

Ruipa Tirurua kept a dish of dried thyme by every door she slept behind, and replaced it each month, and was irritated for the rest of the month if anyone stepped over it. The habit came from Yazius, where the palace corridors smelled of boiled barley and wet felt, and where the only room in the king's house that smelled of anything else was the herb store. She never gave it up. In the granary house at Muwaipa, on the last morning of her life, the dish was still sitting by the threshold, with three iron nails driven into the boards beside it. She had slept through the first two nails going in. She slept heavily by day, as all her kind did, and whoever knew that was glad to use it. She was born in 1196 BCE in Yazius, a walled city-state in Anatolia, in the land that is now Turkey, to a family of cup-bearers who had been dismissed twice for listening at doors. She listened better than they did. By her twenties she was a court informant, which meant that three different officials paid her for what she overheard in the kitchens and the stables, and each believed himself the only one. It was dull work. She had a flat, patient face, and she wept easily and on purpose, which made people want to comfort her and tell her more. The habit of tears was the whole of her first reputation, and it stuck to her for the rest of her life. In 1163 BCE the arrangement collapsed. Two of the officials compared notes, and on a night with no moon she was taken through the north gate and put into the river below the wall, with a stone in her sash. She was thirty-three. She had not been under for long when a stranger's hands hauled her up the bank, none too gently. A trading party out of the Levant had come in off the coast that month for cedar-hauling contracts and tin, following the river road inland, and one of its members, a long-lived man named Yahashon Eltiron, whom the Levant called the Ivory Tyrant, had been walking the bank for reasons of his own. He was her sire. The change took three days and a fever, and he stayed for part of it, long enough to explain what she now was and what could kill her, and then went back to the coast in the same caravan he had arrived with. He is said to be alive still. She never had a letter from him, and she never expected one. What she did with the gift is the part of her life that survives in the road records. Her new talent grew out of her old trade. She lived in The Bronze Vigil, an age of palace archives and long caravans, and she had a smile, an ordinary one before the change and afterward a different thing, and anyone who met it with their eyes open lost the last few minutes. People called it the Forgetting Smile, and it worked on a market square as well as on a single drunk. It did not make them love her or obey her. It simply took away their memory of whatever she had done, and a vampire who feeds on travelers can do a great deal with that. She also had a second trick, much weaker, a flicker of fear she could push at one person at a time. She used it sparingly. It was too close to a quarrel she did not want. She joined the Crimson Circle that year and was made welcome as a useful spy, and then, in a country where any scrap overheard at a palace door was currency, she made herself something more. By the middle of her nine years as a vampire she ran the night market at Yaruhatus. It was held at dusk in the dry bed of a stream, on rugs laid over gravel, with torches on poles, and it sold what trade roads always sell after dark: stolen wool, borrowed names, and information. Nothing there was ever quite reported afterward. A carter who came to buy a donkey woke in the morning with his purse intact and the whole evening smoothed away. A magistrate's agent who came to ask about a missing girl was sent off with a smile and left with only a pleasant feeling. For a while it all worked as she meant it to. In 1155 BCE a hunter came who looked at the ground. Lawaipa Lamuus, a vampire slayer of the Vigil of Anatolia, whom the road people had taken to calling the Veiled Shield, walked through Yaruhatus with a fringe of wool cords hanging across her brow, so that she never saw a mouth. Ruipa noticed her only because the smile slid off. She tried again. The woman at her elbow forgot her question, and the hunter did not. Ruipa had her taken out by the tannery path and left in a ditch to wake at dawn with a sickle-sword in her lap, and she told herself that was the end of the interview. The Vampireverse, as her own side called itself, had a long memory for such failures, and the slayers on the other side had a longer one. The next night the hunter came back, and the market went down on its knees in a single breath, and Ruipa walked out through the crowd with her hands open and smiled at the tannery wall because there was nobody else. It was the last good exit of Ruipa Tirurua's career, though she did not know it. She went up to Muwaipa, a hill town of windowless granary houses, because grain stores are dark and quiet and nobody asks what lives in one. She stayed through the winter. The Crimson Circle sent no help, and she did not ask for any. She did not think she needed it. A hunter on foot, in snow, with only a sickle-sword, seemed to her a thing that would tire and go home. Lawaipa came in 1154 BCE with three iron nails, which in that country were a king's gift and not a hunter's purchase, and drove them into the threshold of the granary house while Ruipa slept. Ruipa woke when the third one went in. She understood at once what the sound meant, because the Ivory Tyrant had told her about nails, in the days when she had been listening for the sort of thing he said. She could not cross the sill. She could not leave through the thatch without passing the sun. She waited. When the roof was torn open from above, she stood in the light with her hands out and said something short, which the hunter never repeated, and she smiled once more, with nothing in it. The Weeping Whisper was destroyed there, nine years after the river and forty-two years after her birth, in the first hour of the morning. She had no childer and had made no friends. The dish of thyme was found by the granary keeper, who had no idea what it was, and who put it on the shelf beside his lamp because it smelled better than the barley.
