Shaa Shamua

Shaa Shamua, the Gaunt Architect, was a vampire assassin of the Crimson Line who built a night market in Anatolia around her own weaknesses and ran it for fifty years. In 1062 BCE she walked into a burning dye-house to finish the slayer Arili Kutaripa, and he finished her too.

On the last morning she carried a needle-bladed dagger of bronze in her left sleeve, a pouch of dried plums, a boxwood comb with two teeth missing, a clay token stamped with the sign of the Crimson Line, and a square of linen with a blue stain on one corner. She carried no lamp and no flint, because she never did. The plums were for the walk. She had the habit of eating one before any job, slowly, and spitting the stone into her palm to count it afterward, as if stones might later be wanted as evidence. The pouch was full when she left the Zilaas road, and it was still full when she was found, which suggests that for once she did not think of what she was walking into as work. Shaa Shamua was born in 1148 BCE at Lahatus, a mountain shrine in Anatolia in what is now Turkey, where her mother cooked for the priests and she was taught early which doors to knock on and which to leave alone. A palace steward took her on at eleven as a kitchen girl, and the palace taught her the real profession. She became an assassin the way other children become weavers, by watching, by being corrected, and by doing it for years until it stopped being a thing she thought about. Her work was done with a needle-bladed dagger, in corridors, at the moment a man put down his cup. It paid well. She also borrowed against it, because she liked to buy her way out of anything unpleasant, and by thirty-six she had owed money to the wrong three people at once. In 1112 BCE she was running from her debtors through the lower town and ducked into a cellar that happened to be the wrong one. The man asleep in it was Shaa Arrutias, a long-lived builder of the old school whom people called the Velvet Architect, and he woke. She never described what followed in any detail she cared to share, but the outcome is known: he made her what he was, fever and hunger and all, and he gave her his trade along with his name. He was the same man who had built half the underground ways of Zilaas, and she learned from him that a room has only as many exits as the person drawing it chooses to draw. He is said to be alive still, somewhere in Anatolia, though she did not see him for most of her last two decades. She never understood why he had picked her. She suspected it was the cellar. What she made of herself afterward, in The Bronze Vigil, and as a name in the Vampireverse, is the reason anyone remembers her. She had two gifts, both of the body and both costly. The first was speed. People called it the Blur Road, which was less a road than a short stretch of ground she could cross in the time between two heartbeats, as if the air had been folded for her, and it tore her tendons each time. The second was that the tendons mended almost as fast. She spent them and grew them back. What she paid in return was hunger, so fierce that after a hard night she would feed on whatever came to hand and then lie in a dark room for a day without speaking. The slayers learned two things about her over the years, hard-won and not cheap. Running water stopped her at a threshold. Fire hurt her the way it hurts anyone, and then her flesh mended it, which was worse. She ran the night market at Zilaas for most of her fifty years. It was her design, which is how Shaa Shamua became known as the Gaunt Architect. The passages ran under the stalls and came up in back rooms, in stables, and in the dry cistern behind the potters' row. She laid out the whole market so that no path crossed running water, since she had learned the first lesson of the cellar and the second of the canal. A trader who came to buy salt in Zilaas might also be sold a name, a debt, an introduction to a magistrate, or a night of silence, and the Crimson Line took its share of every sale. She made no childer in all that time. She said that one apprentice in her life was enough, and she meant the man who had made her. The vampire slayer who spoiled it came in 1066 BCE. She had heard of him already, because a market hears everything: a stormer called Arili Kutaripa, the Ashen Arrow, who answered to no vigil and ran straight at doors. She did not take him for a serious problem. He came through the north arch on a feast night, at a flat run, with a stake of olive wood in his fist, and she crossed the courtyard so quickly that the torches did not flicker. The blade went in under his ribs. She felt it meet something. But he did not drop, and he did not turn, and he went backward across the plank bridge over the canal in one long stride, and she stopped at the edge because she had to. It was the only time in fifty years that anyone had made her stop in her own market by accident. He left her a smear of blood on the bridge and the beginning of a bad habit, which was thinking about him. For four years he cost her more than she liked to count. Nine covens fell in the foothills, and the road trade thinned, and the Crimson Line asked her pointedly what an assassin was for. She heard that he was drawing rations at the granary in Tishamuipa and asking after the dye-house on the mill-race. She did not need a clerk to tell her what that meant. A stormer who asks about water and a reed roof means to use both. She went anyway. She was eighty-six years old in the world, fifty of them spent as something else, and she had begun to find the market tiresome. At Tishamuipa, in 1062 BCE, the leat was already running across the threshold when she arrived, and the roof had begun to smoke. She did not wait. The Blur Road took her through the doorway and the water together, and through the first of the fire, and she burned and healed and burned again before she reached him. The needle went in under his jaw. The stake went into her at the same instant, and they went down on the wet floor with the dye running between them. Arili was found with his hand still around the wood. She was found with the pouch of dried plums unopened, and the clerk who counted what lay in the ashes entered them with the barley.
