She first saw the woman at dusk in 1880 BCE, on the terrace above the drain at Cuchil, and the first thing she noticed was the cord. It was a long knotted thing, and the woman was walking it along a retaining wall with the grave attention of a person reading. Tzitl Yakal, assassin of the Ashen House, had been in that town for most of four centuries and nobody had ever measured her walls in front of her. She meant to learn who the woman was before killing her, which was a mistake, because the woman's wrist was a degree too warm and when she turned, the stake was already in the air. Tzitl was not where it landed. She never was. Over 862 years she had stopped thinking of that as skill. The Vampireverse, which prizes such things, called her the Silent Architect and left it there. She was born in Cuchil, in what is now Mexico, in the region later called Mesoamerica, in 2283 BCE. It was a temple town that was then little more than a ring of mud-brick houses around a platform. Her family carried salt and obsidian on their backs along the river path, and she learned to kill the way other children learn to haggle, because the families that moved salt had rivals and the rivals had to be dealt with quietly. She was good at it for a reason she could not explain: a pressure behind the eyes, a tightening at the hinge of the jaw, half a heartbeat before any blade or club came her way. The Ashen House later called this Blade's Whisper. To her it was a bad tooth that told the weather. It left her with headaches that could last a day, and it made crowded rooms unbearable, for the warning never stopped when there were forty people holding knives for the feast. She was turned in 2239 BCE, in the last centuries of the First Night and at forty-four, after a job went wrong at a river crossing and a steward's men left her in the reeds with a spear wound under the ribs. The one who found her fed from her and then, by design, did not finish. Tzitl never named that person. In the Ashen House it was not asked, and over the centuries she told the story of her making in four different ways so that none could be checked. What she took from the night was practical: a body that no longer tired as it should, a hunger on a fixed schedule, and a plain, unwelcome understanding of fire and noon. She had every reason to remain careful and she did. She rose in the House by being the one that things did not happen to. Her method gave her the alias. She did not stab people in doorways if a loosened scaffold would do the work, and she preferred a ladder, a rotted lashing or a wall left to settle. In the Bronze Vigil's records she is credited with more than a hundred deaths in Cuchil's valley that were thought at the time to be accidents. Her strength was far beyond a woman's of her size, and she used it mostly to adjust things at night, a beam here and a pin there. Twelve cells of hunters came for her across the centuries and she outlasted each, partly by sense and partly by outliving the ones who had been paid to search. Then came the woman with the cord, the only vampire slayer who ever made her feel her age. After the stake at the terrace in 1880 BCE, Tzitl's blade crossed the engineer's forearm in the same moment and skidded off it as off a fired pot, leaving a black smear and no cut. That was the end of the first meeting. Tzitl went out through the culvert with her ears ringing and spent the next three nights learning who Coli Pacotl was. She learned that the woman was an engineer first, that the highlands called her the Restless Lantern, and that she hummed. It was the humming that unsettled her most. The Silent Architect was not used to enemies who were cheerful. She made a vampire of her own in 1851 BCE, when she turned a river-cult knife named Tzian Ahzoli in a night she later remembered as ill-judged. She was not fond of the arrangement. A childe was an obligation, a thing that could be seen and followed, and she found that she missed being unaccompanied. She made two more across the centuries, Jia Ren in 1604 BCE and Kupali Ahkuic in 1511 BCE, each time telling herself it would be the last. Tzian was destroyed by a slayer in 1819 BCE. Jia Ren fell in 1578 BCE, and Kupali, the worst of them, was sealed away in 1445 BCE. She outlived all three, which was typical. The rivalry with Coli Pacotl never produced a result. In 1868 BCE the engineer walked into a burning grain store at Cuchil, her arms glowing, and Tzitl, who feared fire above anything the world held, retreated through the back wall rather than test it. It was the nearest she came to losing. In 1863 BCE a trader mentioned in passing that the woman had died of a lung fever on a causeway, and Tzitl was surprised to find she was annoyed, as one is by a debtor's death. She had no vendetta left to settle, and Tzitl Yakal did not take up new ones for sport. She had Cuchil, and the terrace, and four hundred and forty-two years of nights still ahead of her. They ended in 1421 BCE, not at Cuchil but under Maxopaic, where people who had learned her weaknesses over a long time walled her into a chamber and sealed it with her inside. There was no fire for her to fear there and no light to burn her. There was only the stone. By then she had stopped caring who had built it. Cuchil's terrace wall stood for a long time. The story among the potters in the valley was that on certain nights a tall woman could be seen running her thumb along its joints, one after another, as if checking them for faults.
