Via Bhaarini

Via Bhaarini, the Pale Architect, was a harbor shock-warrior of the Indus and Ganges Plain turned into a vampire in 1592 BCE, who joined no coven and outran everyone for sixty-five years. She and the slayer Arini Maniini killed each other at Depraan in 1527 BCE.

The conch had a crack down its lip, and the crack was the reason the whole Plain knew she was coming. Via Bhaarini wore it on a cord at her belt, a grey whorled shell as long as a forearm that she had once blown from the harbor wall of Sunideesh to call the boarding parties to the water. After 1592 BCE it could no longer be blown. It whistled instead, thinly and out of tune, whenever she moved faster than a walk, and she had learned over the decades that no one who heard that note lived to be sure of what had made it. She could have taken it off. She did not. A person who is hunted by everyone gets used to being announced. Via Bhaarini was born in 1628 BCE in Sunideesh, a harbor settlement on the coast of what is now India, where her father mended nets and her mother traded dried fish with the boat-people of the south. She was the loudest child in the quay and the one who would jump from the harbor wall for a bead of shell. At eighteen she joined the harbor lord's boarding crews as a stormer, a shock-warrior sent over the rail first so that the others would follow. It was a short career for most. Via was good at it because she did not feel fear until afterward, and then she felt it all at once, privately, behind a closed door. She wanted a stone house, a boat of her own and the chance to turn down an order, and she had the first two when she was thirty. She drowned in 1592 BCE in a flooded river while chasing a raider who had killed her boat-mate, and someone dragged her out by the hair. That someone was Tangqin Zhao, the Midnight Widow. It was a long way for her to have come. She had left the Yellow River Basin of China the year before last with a jade caravan, walked west over the high passes in the salt trade and then down to the Indus lands with traders who thought she was a sick aunt, and nobody can say now why she was in the Plain at all. She made Via a vampire on the riverbank at the age of thirty-six, stayed through the dry season to teach her what the sun would do, and left when the monsoon broke. She is said to be alive still. She told Via nothing about the faction she belonged to, and Via, who had spent her life under orders, answered to no one afterward. She wanted no house, no coven and no sire's voice in her head. The conch cracked the first morning. She picked it up from the wall where she had left it, filled her new lungs, and blew, and the shell split along the lip with a note like a goat being stepped on. She stood there looking at it for a long time. Then she tied it back on, whistling. Her gift was Fleetfall. At speed the air in front of her was shoved aside so hard that it cracked, her outline smeared into pale afterimages, and her skin took blows that should have opened it. It also meant that her hands shook for an hour afterward, her eyes bled at the corners, and she needed blood inside the next watch or she would drop where she stood. She learned the limits from her own sleeping place: running water at a threshold, iron nails driven into a sill. Those were the dangerous doors. She never married her habits to one house, and over sixty-five years she kept no childer, which she said was because she could not be trusted with one. The Plain took her for a flood omen in the early years and then gave her the name the Pale Architect, in the years of the Bronze Vigil, because she took barges apart plank by plank and left the crews standing neck-deep in the current. Eleven villages of the Indus and Ganges Plain paid her in grain to stay away, and the Vampireverse, which never agreed on anything about her, agreed that she was bad for business. In 1561 BCE she took the river town of Pataan's entire flood-stores in one night, forty boats' worth, and stacked them on the opposite bank in neat rows, apparently to see whether she could. A vampire slayer from the hills would have called it showing off. She called it keeping her hands in. She was a Stormer in the old harbor sense, a woman who ran at trouble, and she hunted her quarry the way she had boarded ships, fast and without discussion. Nobody had ever stopped her for long. In 1547 BCE a spearman escorting a grain barge at the brick weir of Kotaru heard her coming a mile off and had enough time to take his wool out of his ears. That was the first clash with Arini Maniini, the Gilded Hound. She passed him in one breath and took a handful of his sleeve, and for the first time in many years someone turned his head and looked at her wake. It annoyed her for a day and fascinated her for twenty years. He built traps she had to read; he nailed doors; he sat up whole nights on the far bank hearing her not move. She came to know his sleep. She came to know his wool. At Depraan in 1527 BCE she walked into the granary he had prepared, knowing quite well that it was a trap, because she was a hundred and one years old and had begun to find the waiting dull. The doorsill was wet with a stream turned through it, and the nails were in the stone, and she felt both go through her like a knife through a thigh. She got the rest of herself across the threshold anyway. His stake went in under her ribs. His throat was in her hands. She did not mean to take it so hard. The villagers of Depraan found the cracked conch in the ford and hung it on the sluice gate, and the irrigators blew it at dawn to call the water-keepers out. It had no true note, and it never did, so each morning it gave the same thin, off-key whistle down the channel, and no one in the village could say any longer who it had belonged to.
