Waruili Kuzius

Waruili Kuzius, The Gaunt Judge, was a granary clerk of Tupia who was made a vampire at forty-five and served the Winter Brood as a spy across Anatolia for three and a half centuries. Her long, cold contest with the slayer Mutuas Kuyaipa never produced a corpse, and she disappeared on a road in 2348 BCE.

Mutuas Kuyaipa saw her first at dusk in the grain yard behind the Tin Gate of Hatshaili, in 2686 BCE, and what he noticed was that she was the thinnest person in the yard and the only one reading the tallies properly. She had a scribe's wrap, a lamp, a stylus. She turned a page of the clay without hurry. He thought, as he told it afterwards to the one person he told anything to, that she looked like a judge pronouncing sentence on a column of figures, and that the figures knew they were guilty. Then she put an awl through his shield. That was the entire beginning of the matter, from the other side of the table. From her side it began in Tupia, a temple town on the Anatolian plateau in what is now Turkey, where she was born in 2755 BCE and kept the temple granary's records for most of forty years. Waruili Kuzius was a spare, careful woman, nobody's idea of an adventurer, with a talent for two things: knowing exactly what a large number of people were owed, and noticing who was lying about it. She did not marry. She kept a small clay lamp she had owned since childhood, a cheap one with a chipped lip, and she never lit any other in her own room. Her private want was to be the last person anyone suspected, and she was good at it, because nobody ever thought to look at the clerk. The Winter Brood noticed her in 2710 BCE. A vampire named Shaa Arrutias, called The Velvet Architect, who ran the Brood's Anatolian interests, sat three evenings in the granary in the guise of a grain factor, checking her columns for errors and finding none, and on the fourth evening he asked what she would do with a very long life. She was forty-five. She said she would audit it. He made her that night, in the sense that the Vampireverse uses, and Shaa Arrutias is, by every account, still alive. She did not speak of him warmly, but she kept his tallies for the rest of her time. The body she was given mended itself. The Brood called it Second Dawn, because a wound taken in the evening would be closed by sunrise as though a second morning had arrived to mend her; she woke from it gaunt and ravenous, and over the centuries the gauntness set. She could take a stab through the ribs and lose only a night. She was not unkillable, and she knew the list better than most: a line of running water laid across a threshold, which she would not cross; the tip of silver, which stayed in the flesh and wept; and the fact that Second Dawn took a full day of hunger afterward. In the whole of The First Night there were perhaps a dozen of the Brood who could take a blow as she did. For a spy, the cost mattered less than the dependability. She never had to explain a wound twice. For twenty-four years before her meeting with Mutuas, she moved grain-accounts around Anatolia for the Brood, and learned to read a city by its debts. She bought clerks and rented scribes. She was called the Gaunt Judge by the Brood's own agents because, when one of them skimmed, she would sit with the figures for an evening and then simply tell the person which numbers were wrong and by how much. They found it more frightening than a knife. In 2686 BCE she went to the Tin Gate in Hatshaili to read the city's grain count, because someone was buying barley in odd lots and she wanted to know who. The man with the shield and the torch caught her wrist. She heard the bone go and looked down at it with something close to courtesy. It was the first time anyone had hurt her since she was made, and the surprise was real. She went over the wall, spent the night in a drained cistern, and by noon she was standing in the bread line at the granary with the arm whole. She also came away with a detail, and she kept it. The man had known the tallies were false before he spoke. He read numbers as she did. For the next twenty years it was a contest of accounts. Mutuas Kuyaipa bought silver and sold it to the Vigil, and she bought grain and sold it to the Brood, and each learned to read the other's habits from the shape of what was missing. He cut a channel of spring water across the sill of his house inside the wall. She walked past it twice a month, on the other side of the street, for years. Neither of them ever made the first move into that doorway. She considered it once and decided that the reckoning, if it came, would cost the Brood more than it was worth, and that she would rather have a rival who understood her than a replacement who did not. In 2666 BCE she stood across the water-channel from his sill for a night, the night he died, with his lamp burning in the window, and she did not go in or leave. She had no particular word for what she did. She had no childer, no student, no protégé, and nobody noticed her there. In the Brood's own accounts Waruili Kuzius is listed as a spy first and a killer a distant second, and the one vampire slayer who ever stood against her more than once is entered only as the broker, with a sum beside his name that nobody ever collected. The Brood used her for three more centuries. She vanished in 2348 BCE, aged four hundred and seven, on a trade road leading east out of Anatolia, and the Winter Brood's ledgers record the date and nothing more. Each year, a jar of lamp oil is left on the sill of a house in Hatshaili, and the people who live in it have never learned who pays.
