Black ronin — Carbon-Fibre Enhanced Kevlar Weave

This is what lets Black Ronin absorb a glancing knife strike or stray round without it ending the night - his baseline protection under the uniform, worn on every outing regardless of the job.
Worn as a fitted undersuit beneath his outer uniform every time he goes out - he treats going without it as a genuine risk, not an inconvenience to skip on a "quiet" night.
He had the torso panel re-cut slightly looser across the shoulders after the weave's original fit restricted his draw on the katana mid-swing - a small tailoring change, not a change to the weave itself.
Its quiet flex means he can take a rooftop landing or a scuffle without the fabric giving away his position the way stiffer armor would - useful specifically because his approach relies on staying unheard as long as possible.
It will not stop a rifle round or a full-force sword strike, and he knows it - he treats it as protection against the incidental threats of a fight, not as license to walk into one he could otherwise avoid.
A gift from a former ally with military supply contacts, given to him not long after a close call left him hospitalised for a week - he has not gone out on patrol without some version of it since.

Black ronin — Katana

Black Ronin's katana is his primary answer to armed opponents at close range - a deliberate callback to the swordsmanship discipline his mentor drilled into him long before he ever put on a mask.
He draws it almost exclusively as a last-resort melee option once a confrontation has already gone loud - his default approach favours stealth and unarmed takedowns, with the blade reserved for opponents who are themselves armed or who outmatch him physically.
He re-ground the edge himself to a slightly steeper bevel than a traditional polish, trading a small amount of cutting performance for an edge that holds up better against the modern materials - kevlar straps, sheet metal, reinforced clothing - he actually encounters, and swapped the original lacquered saya for a matte, sound-dampened polymer sheath he can draw silently.
Against a firearm, he uses the blade defensively - closing distance fast enough that a drawn sword becomes a deflection and disarming tool rather than a target he has to out-run - then finishes the exchange unarmed once the weapon is neutralised.
It is a last-resort weapon, not his everyday tool: drawing it signals a fight he could not avoid, and an extended bladed exchange against multiple armed opponents is exactly the scenario his training tells him to disengage from rather than win outright.
He carries the sword his mentor gave him after his final training bout in the mountains outside the city - the blade itself predates his time as Black Ronin, and he has never fought under the mask without it within reach.
